Guest guest
Our son Dylan was casted Dec 17 in Salt lake. The staff there are great and we were treated great. Dylan put me through the ringer, maybe Dad's not the best person to go. It's funny because Angie told me that it's never Dad who goes alone always Mom. Thanks to Dr. D'Astous, Mike Pond and Angie they really are great people. This cast is alot different than the ones that were put on in Canada. It goes over both shoulders and down low on the hips diapering is a challenge. His curve was at 68 degrees 66 degree Khyphosis they were able to bring it down to 48* and 40* . This week we went to our hospital here to show the cast to them they took an Xray and his curve has progressed to 50* in this cast. We are kind of beside ourselves Dylan's curve is very aggressive. Dylan has adjusted well to his new cast. We return to Saltlake March 4 for a cast change and hopefully then it will still be at 50*. (Mom's coming this time.) Dr. D'Astous has told me that surgery is most likely in his future. We are hoping later rather than sooner. I just want to say thanks to Jacki and Siobhan, and Kylie it was great chatting with you there. I hope you had a great christmas and your daughters are doing well. Thanks Darrell
Guest guest
Hi Darrell, We also go to SLC and had the opportunity to meet Jacki, Siobhan, and Kylie. How lucky we are to be surrounded by such great people and have Dr. D'Astous and Mike Pond treating our little ones. I hope Dylan continues to improve. You state below that your docs in Canada took the latest X-Ray which showed a progression of 5 degrees. I just wanted to share that our experience has been that everyone does their x-rays a little different and the child can be positioned differently. So, I guess I am hoping that Dylan really hasn't progressed and they just measured him differently, plus I remember hearing that there is a 5 degree margin of error. Anyhow, thanks for sharing your story and maybe someday our paths will cross. ~ & SLC Cast Our son Dylan was casted Dec 17 in Salt lake. The staff there are great and we were treated great. Guest guest
Hi Darrell, I just wanted to let you know that even though your son's recent x-ray is at 50* that it dosen't necessarily mean that the curve has progressed since Dr. D measured it. There is a 3* measurement error. Also, each doctor could be measuring it from a slightly different point. Noah's curve measured only 10* in his last cast. In his current cast it's at 14*. Angie said that it's likely just the measurement margin error of + or - 3* and not that his curve progressed. Most likely his curve remained the same. Angie also said " if you've ever watched a doc do the measurement you'd see why there is a margin of error. " She said they do it pretty fast and that it's not an exact science. I just thought I'd let you know so that you don't get too worried that your son's curve is progressing. Even though it's possible - it's probably not the case. I'm glad to hear your doing well. Guest guest
Hi Darrel, My husband also went a few times by himself! I've done it solo as well and it is not easy going it alone. The difference between 48 and 50 degrees is within the margin of error when measuring (there can be a difference between +/- 5 degrees depending on who measured it, so he's not necessarily getting any worse! Maybe you could contact Dr. D and get him to look at the films, but I think you are probably okay. Noelle (12-2-01) Ian (8-15-04) SLC Cast Our son Dylan was casted Dec 17 in Salt lake. Guest guest
Darrell Kudos to you for being such a brave Dad!! Way to go. As everyone else has said, xrays can show + or - 5 degrees. Going from 68 to 50 in the first cast is a great starting correction. You may notice some differences since the casts in SLC differ from what he was getting in Canada. The next few casts will show what kind of correction he is able to obtain. At least he is being allowed time to grow and get his curve down as low as possible and put off surgical intervention as long as possible. Dr. D'Astous is one of the best. You are in great hands. Guest guest
Hi Darrell, It sounds like you're doing reasonably well, and Dylan is adjusted to the cast. That's great! We're having a few problems, but I'm hoping that we can resolve the major issue in a couple of weeks. I guess walking is helpful. can't walk yet, so it's making it more challenging for us as he can't really crawl or sit well. Most kids go from creeping to crawling... went from crawling back to creeping. How is Dylan doing with the over-arm straps? I'm very interested to know how he's doing. Does he sleep on his back? has one over the arm, and although he doesn't like to sleep on that side, I think he's getting used to it. I'm wondering if we went with 2 overarm straps rather than one, if he would be able to crawl (because then the cast wouldn't be so high under his arm). Well, is fussing so I must go. I'm so glad to hear about the correction (fantastic) and the adjusting...I'm so happy for you!! > > Our son Dylan was casted Dec 17 in Salt lake. Guest guest
Maybe I said that wrong we are happy its only 50*. Because in the 5 casts here they were able to get correction to the 30* range only to have it progress further than it was originally. The Ortho here said that its great to have it holding at 50*. Its wrong of me to say its progressed in this cast. The Ortho here has told me that Dr. D'Astous and SLC Shriners is one of the best places in North America to have him treated. In SLC they just have alot more cases than they do here experience is everything. Dr. D'Astous and our 2 Ortho's here are good friends they trained together in Canada. I told him he has to come back to Canada so I don't have to travel so far. LOL Im not so brave anymore going to get casts here was easy the hospital is 20 minutes away not so with SLC.
