Guest guest
Hello, Our first cast is only a couple days away. I'm getting so nervous that is going to wake up and be so upset at us!!!! Esp. since he will have the overarm straps (thank you Sandi for all of your help with those anxieties). I had to go to the doc today for a medical issues and I just broke down crying. I must be holding something in...trying to be strong, I guess. Any words of comfort?? He's just been so happy lately...having been through cancer and chemo...and now we're entering a whole new world. I want him to be emotionally healthy and happy. I know this is the best, but it's like entering the great unknown. I know that he will adjust, but I don't want to go through the adjustment period...does that make sense?? Thank GOD for this group! THANK YOU OLIVIA (Salazar), her husband, and daughter ISABELLA for meeting with us so that we could see the cast in action. Isabella is such a beautiful girl and doing so well! I was searching through posts for diapering tips because has been waking up recently in the a.m. with a wet tummy (and not in a cast) because he's been sleeping on his tummy. We use LUVS size 3, which seemed to work through chemo (they pumped him full of fluid and the diapers would be huge...plus we had to wear gloves b/c the urine was considered 'radioactive'). I still have some questions. will be 17 months old and in size 3 LUVS. * My initial plan is as follows: 1) Use pantyliners in the front and back of the casts. Question: Do I use pantyliners? or POISE small pads? or larger pads? Can I just use the tape backing, or do I need to reinforce with water-proof tape? Where do I buy water-proof tape if they don't provide enough at the hospital?? How far do the pantyliners/poise pads fit inside the cast? IF you have any pictures, that would really help! 2)Place breast pads (no plastic backing) around the penis before diapering. 3) If the cast/mesh gets wet, wipe gently with wet cloth and then blow dry with cool air, correct? 4) If that doesn't work, buy pull-ups (like they use for potty training) and put over diaper, tucking up into cast. But, what size? 2T? The ones I saw at the store didn't seem to have much padding around the sides to absorb leaks. What brand? 5) Should I switch from my LUVS to Huggies Overnights or Pamper's Cruisers? I'm hesitant to switch when the LUVS has been working well for us...except for the front-wetting issues lately. Thanks for your time!! * Lake Elsinore, CA, mom to , 16 m.o. diagnosed with neuroblastoma at age 2.5 months, status/post 8 cycles chemotherapy and chest mass excision at San Diego Children's, in remission. Guest guest
Hi, I have a 17 month old that's currently in his first cast and what really seems to work for him is using a size 3 diaper tucked in inside the cast ( back and front) and a size 5 diaper on top of the cast to hold it in place. For us, huggies has work the best. I hope this helps! Good luck! e McDowell wrote: Hello, Our first cast is only a couple days away. Guest guest
, We all know what you are feeling right now. I'll tell you the truth, those first few days are AWFUL!!! Prepare yourself, BUT I think it was harder on me than . Just as you know with everything has been through so far, children are amazing as they adjust to things. As far as the diapering tips, everyone has tried different things. You have LOTS of good ideas. And a great plan in place. You will figure out what works best for you guys. We used in casts 1-4( started at 15 mths)a sanitary pad and extra diaper on the outside(only at night). At the time I used Sam's diapers and the outside diaper I preferred Pampers Cruisers. Casts 5 and 6 I started using the Poise pads. They worked GREAT! The sanitary pads and Poise pads...........put them in the diaper just you would use one. We never used the water proof tape, but I know others did. The pads(sanitary or Poise)I always got extra long so it literally went from the front of the diaper all the way up the back inside. I wish I had pictures. Does this make sense?? If you want more details I can call you if you want. I am sure others will chime in with their experiences as well. We never really had wetting issue until got older. Once we started having that issue we started cutting off the drinks about an hour before bed. Plus the Poise pads did the trick for us. You have much more info than I did when we started so I am sure you guys will do fine. If you think of anything else please let us know. Take care, Tasha Mommy of twin boys- and 33 months Fort Worth, Texas McDowell wrote: Hello, Our first cast is only a couple days away. Guest guest
Tasha speaks volumes!!! I'll just say " agreed " And, we never had to do ANYTHING with extra absorbancy - just the regular old Pampers Cruisers. You could always try them now, before the cast S

Guest guest
Thanks to everyone for responding! I don't have time to write the details, but if anyone is 'on' at this time of night, I have a question. Has anyone used Duck Tape as the waterproof tape to cover the cast? I'm assuming it's okay, but that's what we bought because we didn't have resources for anything else...and didn't really know what else to buy. Dr. Kishan said any type of waterproof tape was fine. Guest guest
Nevermind - I just found a post from Sandi saying she used Duct tape with Jack. The tape we bought actually says " Duck " on it but it's the same as " Duct " - kinda funny. This will be very interesting. I'm up in 4 hours to nurse pre-op. I'm hopoing that we're not up all night tomorrow night. Any advise on first night sleeping solutions? Thanks Group! Guest guest
Hi , As someone that just went through it I will recommend you to try to relax. My 16 month old had a normal night. He slept very well. If anything I was the one that had a very hard time relaxing. His second cast is next week and I'm already anxious, but at least I know now what to expect. Good luck and God bless you and your family! e McDowell wrote: Nevermind - I just found a post from Sandi saying she used Duct tape with Jack. Guest guest
, Just wanted you to know I am thinking about you all today. Everything will be fine.........you sound like you are well prepared. And after this 1st cast things will be easier. You will know what to expect. That first night with we had a bed in the LR. He is a twin and they sleep in the same room so I wanted at least one of them to sleep. I was right by him all night. He did " try " to toss and turn, but mainly moaned for me to help. The 2nd night........no problem at all. He was back to sleeping on his tummy. Good luck and I am saying a prayer for you all. Let us know how things go.
