That sounds like it would be a PT issue. Does he see a PT? We've never

experienced this, but it doesn't mean it is not related.

Toeing Out?

My son just got a pediatric orthopedic walker last week and has been using it

to walk around the house. I am noticing that he always seems to start off with

his left foot and follow with his right. The right foot seems to lag behind (he

picks it up and steps with it, but it seems to be a slower movement than with

the left foot) and that his right foot toes out quite a bit. I had posted a

couple weeks ago about how we have noticed an assymetry with his army crawling

(mostly dragging the right foot) and I got quite a few responses back about

people noticing the same with their children, so I'm wondering if anyone else

has noticed this same walking issue that we are noticing? I'm trying to figure

out if these issues are related to the cast, the scoliosis, or an underlying

disorder (or a combination)?

He does see a PT. I don't know whether she has fully seen the toeing out issue

or not. He just got his walker last week and I haven't had a chance to really

discuss it with her. I plan on bringing it up this Friday. I think in general

she's probably not going to have a whole lot of insight into it though. She's a

very bright PT and will probably have some good exercises for us to do with him

to help. But she hasn't really dealt with the scoliosis and casting before and

Dylan seems to have a lot of quirky issues, so when it comes to the why is he

doing this, we will have to defer to the doctors at this point, because she does

not see any obvious muscular assymetries, etc.

What does 'toeing out' mean exactly? 's (17 m.o., right-sided

scoliosis) feet are both very pronated, and his always starts with his

left foot...lifts that knee up high... and drags the right somewhat.

The right leg almost seems longer when he stands (kind of propped

out). He's not walking yet, but a little bit in his walker. The

ortho doesn't think it's the scoliosis? (maybe weakness from

chemotherapy or could be normal baby feet that will straighten out),

my PT thinks it is b/c of the scoliosis b/c his hips are off and

recommended orthotics (shoe inserts to stablize the ankle) so that the

feet correct as he's in the cast....in sum, I don't really have a

clear answer. It did seem to get better with the cast. We just keep

trying everything.

interesting you mention this. My son Devyn uses his left foot

for everyhing. When he first got his cast in May I noticed more that

his right foot turned inwards when he walked. He see's a Physical

therapist twice a month. She works on using the right foot as much as

possible. We walk him up and down the stairs and try to make him put

his right foot first then left to follow. They also took a drawing of

his feet and have determined he is very flat footed. They are trying

to get him orthotics to see if it will help.

Hi ,

My son Finn walks (assisted) with his left foot pointing out. I was told that

he was trying to balance himself.

Hi - I'm considering a orthopedic walker for who is not

walking at 18 months. His feet are pronated, he always leads with his

left (right-sided scoliosis), and his right foot drags behind and

seems longer/weaker. I'm wondering if the walker was recommended by

your ortho or PT? Has it been helpful?

Thank you

The walker was recommended by my PT. Not so much for the unusual gait, but just

for the gross motor delay in general. Before we got the walker, he could not

cruise around pushing push toys, because they were just too fast for him and he

didn't have the balance and would just fall right over. However, by the time we

got the walker he was cruising all over the place and can now use his push toys,

etc. We probably haven't used his walker as much as we should, but we are

starting to use it more frequently now. I think the main thing it helps him

with is balance.
