Hi ,

I have a baby girl Isabelle who is 15 months. We have also been

seeing Dr.Emans in Boston. We see him this Friday for Isabelle but

also for my other daughter Emma, who is 3 years old. I suspect that

she to has scoliosis, we will find out this friday. I noticed one

shoulder is higher Than the other and one side of her back is

noticebly bigger than the other.

I mentioned casting to Dr. Emans and he didn't want to go that route

yet with Isabelle. I think he wants to see if this new brace, with

the correction built into the brace, would work for her. I wanted to

know how you felt about the casting? Did Dr. Emans do it?

Thats great that the brace is holding him!

What is the degree of curvature for Isabelle, 15 months? Is her curve too

small to warrant treating it early with the Mehta Method? Just curious. The

rapid growth spurt is generally 0-2 years of age.

Just wanted to share that Dr. Emans is actually the one that told us that Sophia

needed Dr. Mehta style early treatment with serial casting (we had not heard of

it, but knew the wait and see approach wasn't the right answer either so we had

continued to press for more options). Based on the MRI and multiple x-rays we

had sent to Boston, he said that was her best hope. He referred us to Dr.

in Erie, PA. This was when she was 7 months old.

Shellie,

In october, she started with a 40 degree thoracic curve and a 30

degree lumbar curve. Now, as of last x-ray which was in December in

brace, her thoracic curve is 30 degree and lumbar is 25.

Hi Tina,

That makes me feel so much better knowing he had Sophia's best

interest at heart and not let his ego get in the way of what she

really needed. I have been seeing Dr. Emans since middle October and

I really like him. He is a straight shooter. I would think he would

have done the same for me if he thought Isabelle needed serial

casting.

I was just wondering with her age, why he didn't refer you also for early

treatment with the Mehta Method. Maybe due to her RVAD number? I guess I am

just a little biased towards early treatment because I know how difficult a life

of surgery is. The window of correction time is very small, before it is too

late to resolve the curve. Then years of bracing and eventual surgery are

inevitable. The sooner the curve is iradicated, the better. I don't mean to

offend, I am just very passionate! After viewing Mehta's DVD, hanging around

all these years, and seeing my daughter have surgery every 6 mos. I am

determined that every parent have access to information so they can make the

choice they deem best.

Hi ,

May I recommend that you read " Growth as a corrective force in the early

treatment of progressive infantile scoliosis, " by Mehta. This published

medical article can be found in the FILES section of this group. Another

excellent " Early Treatment " source would be the " New Direction " dvd. Both

of these items will ~really~ give you an understanding of this gentle,

effective treatment. Early Treatment is new in the pediatric orthopaedic

community, so please look into both, so you can ask the right questions at

your next appt. Infants & young children have a window of time to benefit

from the Early Treatment Mehta Method, and many parents on this group are

currently experiencing this treatment, so please continue asking questions

and let us know what we can do to help.

I have been out of the loop for a while, so if you have already heard

these recommendations from others, please disregard.

I am sure other parents from your area will share their experiences, as well.

Welcome to CAST!

hi tiffany,

i don't know if christine e-mailed you off-board, but in case she

didn't, i wanted to let you know that dr. emans does not do casting.

if i'm remembering correctly, initially christine went to salt lake

city shriners with dr. d'astous for casting and then switched to erie

shriners since it was closer. dr. emans wholeheartedly agreed to this

treatment.

let us know how your most recent appointment goes.

my best,

I should have been clear..... I figured everyone know Dr E dosent do

casting but he was in colaboration with all 3 docotrs that did

casting for Adan ......Dr D in SLC for 1 year ....Dr for 1

cast then Dr Khoury for the 9 months before he left.

What is her RVAD? maybe this is the reason for his wanting to wait.

Where do you guys live in Mass??

Thanks Deshea for clearing that up
