You have more experience with the casting than I do, but I say go for it. So

far, Dylan hasn't had a problem going anywhere (restuarants, zoos, Downtown

Disney, etc.). I don't know what type of vacations your family does, so you

might need to slightly alter it to accomodate the cast (no beach trips, no

really hot weather). Of course, seeing his Dr. is always an airline flight for

me, so I might have a different perspective. I would just create an emergency

plan by finding out where the local hospitals are, etc. and of course carry

's number with you :)

Vacations

Have any of you taken vacations with a casted child?

Sometimes I think we need to just wait until he's older. Other times,

he seems really portable and fine to go to things like the zoo here -

so what's the difference? But, then I worry something would come up

(and, then another BUT - we don't live where he's casted anyway).

Agh. Decisions.

What have you done?

Hi Sandi,

First of all I am jealous that you are maybe going on a vacation. Never happens

here(husband has a spring/summer business).

We never did even try. Our family lives 6 hours away and didn't even try that.

I was always so afraid he would be too uncomfortable. So while was in a

cast we did without. That being said, Jack may do just fine. was fussy

early on with the whole casting process so we just got use to not doing much.

I guess it depends on each child's temperament.

Let me dream...........where are you guys thinking of going?

We're really fortunate that we homeschool (so no restrictions on the

girls' schedule) and DH gets TONS of vacation time. He gets 18 PTO

days to use however/whenever he can, as well as all the federal

holidays (because the courts are closed) and from Christmas Eve to

January 2nd. They're good to their staff, for sure.

The downside is, he has a blackberry on his hip 24/7, he takes calls

sometimes during dinner or has dinner-hour meetings, and often works

in the evenings or on weekends.

Sometimes I hate it - but other times, I am thankful.

Now, my nerdy confession - we're Disney people. Big time. I LOVE

Disneyworld. I twitch watching those travel channel specials just

watching the things we have done before. I can't stand not having a

vacation to plan and I'm going through withdrawal! LOL Our last trip

was in December of 06 for our 10th anniversary. Jack was four months

and we didn't get to do or see much (which was fine because we've done

a lot prior to that). Now that he's old enough to play along with

Little Einsteins and loves Handy Manny, I really want him to enjoy it

and see the look on his face. And, the girls are really missing it.

We used to go at least once a year and that time has already passed

and they're wondering if/when we'll go back again.

On one hand, it won't kill me to wait until he's 3 (he's almost 18

months). And, realistically, we don't have the money for it now anyway

- so it's not an option for another year - and who knows - by then

maybe we'll be finished with casting! Wouldn't that be great?

But, we always go late in the fall (anywhere between Halloween - which

is still way too hot for a casted baby, much less a typical baby!) and

mid-December. So, I'm already thinking ahead to the end of this year

and just wondering if it can be done. We'd probably have to fly if

he's still in a cast - I can't see making that 15 hour drive (usually

in two days) with him in the carseat.

Of course, that is all contingent on striking oil in my backyard (also

known as selling the other house!) LOL

Thanks for your input, girls :)

The only thing I wouldn't do is the beach. That was a total bust for us.

I think he would be fine with most any other vacation. What exactly are you

thinking of?

If you do anything like Disney, find out first if they have restrictions for

kids with any types of casts. I know Ian couldn't use a bounce house because he

was in a cast. It had something to do with safety/insurance issues. It was for

any type of cast such a cast for a broken arm.

I'm not much help. Don't know what a vacation is!! The only time we travel is

for surgery. That pretty much soaks up any vacation time DH has. If Mo and I

keep going solo on trips, maybe next year. I will say I like Texas over

Colorado for the weather, but we don't get to see and Olivia as much.

If I could dream . . . For MO, to see the horses swim at Chincoteague off the

coast of Virginia. For , probably the biggest roller coaster park in the

U.S. For me, a leisurely tour of Europe, especially London, and Ireland. For

, he would love beaches, possibly Hawaii or Australia. As a couple we

would love to take a missionary trip somewhere. Our pastor is currently in

Russia!!!

Maybe someday. You could take a side job as a travel agent!!

I can't imagine any kiddie rides at Disney that they would tell you he could not

ride due to the cast. I think it is up to you to determine what would be safe

or not. If you go to the Magic Kingdom, I think there would be lots of smooth

baby safe rides for you (even for a kid in a cast).....Dumbo, etc. And of

course the little ones just love the parades and fireworks :)

I think the biggest issue you will have is the FL heat. So, if you decide to

go, try to pick a time of the year when it's not blazing hot.

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I realize that Disney is

really designed for anyone and everyone. I've done it hugely

pregnant, newly pregnant, with a 4 month old, with a toddler (or two),

and with a kiddo on the autism spectrum. We've had food allergies and

sensitivities, too. I mean, they do SUCH a fantastic job of really

taking care of anyone and everyone there - lots of special needs kids

(and adults) are welcomed with open arms and accomodated in every way.

I think, if the finances permit, a December trip may be in order! :)

Thanks for the input!

I think you can also talk to guest relations and they will help you with any

special accomodations you might need. I've heard they are excellent with that.

Don't know that it will be necessary, but if you think of something :) Also,

Orlando has a good children's hospital (Arnold Palmer) and there is a Shriner's

Hospital an hour and a half away in Tampa should the unexpected happen.

I have taken a few trips with in his cast. We

were in St. Louis over the Holidays. He flew just

fine. (We live in Ohio so I really didn't want to

ride for 7 hours with him.) A break will do you good-

even just planning a break will help!

Let us know what you decide.

I know for a fact that Disney is very oriented to helping kids with special

needs after all my years in the Make-A-Wish foundation. They do an awesome

job!!!

Also -- something to keep in mind -- I am making the cooling vests for .

I am working on some now and hope to have them done in the next week or 2 (I

also work as a medical transicriptionist so that has to come first) but I will

be sending these off to as soon as possible. I'm not sure how she is

going to have people order them or what but maybe she can let us know that in a

few days once she gets settled. I will add some pictures to the website so you

can see what I'm making. By using the small icepacks called " Cubies " in the

velcro pockets you can keep the kids cooled off. My daughter used them this past

summer in Denver when it was up in the high 90s and 100 or over. They had them

in a cooler and changed them out about every hour or so and they did a really

good job of keeping Devyn cool.

We take Isabella everywhere. We are Disneyland fanatics and go there

at least twice a month. She rides all the kiddie rides, Pirates of

the Carribbean, and the Haunted Mansion. We avoid activities that

involve water/getting wet and we avoid outdoor activities in the

heat of summer - but who doesn't? We try extremely hard to not let

the cast rule her life or ours. She is a very happy child and the

cast doesn't bother her at all, so I know that has a lot to do with

it too. When we first traveled out of town, I called our medical

insurance company (Blue Shield HMO) and verified what actions would

be appropriate for us to take in order for her emergency services,

if any, to be covered. I also mapped out the closest hospitals and

providers contracted through Blue Shield (website). I always carry

her immunization record and the business cards/contact info of her

pediatrician and ortho specialist. Since she doesn't have any other

conditions, I don't carry any type of medical records. I say, go on

vacation and have a great time.

Sandi,

Please go to Disney, if for no other reason then so I can live through your

experience! I have never been to Disney and haven't had a vacation for almost 5

years (maternity leaves and medical trips/doc appts have eaten up any vacation

time I have from work). I would love to go in a couple years when Sophia is a

little older. I would think that Jack would do fine, especially since you seen

to be the planning type who would have a " plan B " lined up in case anything

happened medically. Also, it would be great for all of you to have fun as a

family. Don't forget to post pictures too!! See, I'm getting excited for you

already :)

Oh, Okay, if you're going to twist my arm ;)

We're thinking maybe December of '08 - if we should be able to afford

it. Or, maybe early '09. That should give us adequate time to plan

and maybe we'll even be finished with casting!! Wouldn't that be

fantastic!?
