Guest guest
Hi, Welcome to the group! It's great that you found your daugher Early Treatment! I have a 2 1/2 yr old son who is in his 3rd cast. Yes, you'll want to pay special attention around the hip area. That seems to be the most common area for irratations due to rubbing. We have had great luck with a natural lotion called Calengia Cream or Calendula Cream. You can find it at most health or natural foods stores. Otherwise Aquaphor works pretty well too and you can find that at any drug store. For bath time...we wash our son's hair in the kitchen sink and then stand him up and sponge bathe the rest. It was challenging at first, but after 9 months of doing it it's become second nature. Feel free to ask many more questions. > > Hello All, > > First let me say it is a blessing to have found this group. Guest guest
Hello, My husband and I were at our initial appt w/Dr. Stasikelis on January 15th, we are set up next month to begin casting for our daughter. I'm glad to hear your daughter is doing well. Are you scheduled yet for a cast change? Rita > > Hello All, > > First let me say it is a blessing to have found this group. Guest guest
This Calengia Cream, do you apply it under the cast or just below the cast in the hip area? Do you apply it regularly or just when there's a need? Do you ever use any non-talc powder also? Thanks julie > > > > Hello All, > > > > First let me say it is a blessing to have found this group. Guest guest
Personally, I'm not comfortable with anything coming in contact with the cast or the shirt underneath. I am so scared of exacerbating breakdown. So, we just try to keep the area as dry as possible and then when the cast is cut off we apply a really thick coat of calendula to him. It usually helps the bruising and peeling by morning to the point where you can't even tell that it was there. Arnica, also available in cream form (I think Weleda makes one) is great for bruising. We also give it to him post-casting (miss mehta agreed). S
Guest guest
We were given express instruction to never put anything under the cast, including ointments and powders. With ointments and lotions, the problem is that the area will never dry, leading to skin breakdown. Powders I guess would never completely get off the skin, so might cause some irritation or general yuckiness at best. Our pediatrician also advised against putting anything on any sores, even after we'd had the cast trimmed due to a bad sore on the hip. She said as long as it was not infected, air was the best thing for it. Between casts, we have had good results using Aquaphor liberally all over his back and especially on the sores. It seemed to help a great deal with soothing and healing the irritation before the appointment for second cast the next morning. I'll look for some calendula cream for the next one and see what it does! , Mommy to Todd Re: Re: We are new to this! Guest guest
Hi , Yep, we just put it below the cast in the hip area. We use it whenever his skin is red (from lots of rubbing.) The redness goes away within hours. It also helps tremedously with the bruising in that 24 hr time between casts. I haven't tried powder at all. ~ > > > > > > Hello All, > > > > > > First let me say it is a blessing to have found this group.
