Guest guest
For those who are treated by Dr. Khoury - can you tell me a little about the casting process? When do you typically have to arrive at the hospital? Is it a first of the morning thing there, too? Do you have the cast cut off the night before and do x-rays? If you go through the children's hospital, how much out of pocket does it typically run per casting with anesthesia and such? Do they petal in the OR or out? How long until you're typically finished at the hospital? Thanks Sandi -- Mom to Madison, Skylar, on, Piper, & - diagnosed with infantile scoliosis at 10 months with a 70° right thoracic curve. Guest guest
Hi Sandi, This is our experience with Children's Hospital and Dr. Khoury...We schedule her casting appt's for first thing on Friday mornings. So, we have to be there Thursday anytime between 9 and 3 to have her cast cut off and to let her skin breathe. The out of cast x-ray is done while she is under anesthesia right before they apply her new cast. He wants her out of cast so many hours to let gravity do its thing and have a more accurate measurement. On the morning of the actual casting we have to be there at 6:00. We wait in a big waiting area until we are called back. then they check her vitals (she's already screaming by this point!) then we are moved to our own private room. Then the parade of nurses, anesthsiology and Dr. Khoury come by and asks questions and talk with us. When they are ready, we walk as far as we can with her, then hand her to a nurse to be taken to the actual OR. The first cast Haley had, they did all of the trimming while she was under anesthesia. The last 2 casts, they trimmed them for the most part, but we still had to have some additional trimming after waking up. THIS IS NOT FUN!!! We are usually out of the hospital by noon. With Haley's last cast, they used the antimicrobial shirt. It is supposed to help absorb some of the smell as well as act as an antimicrobial. Just our experience so far...we can't tell much difference. Who knows though, without it, things could be a lot more smelly huh?!?!? Like said, they do not do petaling. They cushion the edges, then pull the shirt over that and tape it. They cover Haley's cast with the tape, but I always take most of it off. Just leaving it around the edges, to hold the padding and shirt down. As far as ins, Dr. Khoury is a Preffered Provider for our insurance. That helps a lot! Our actual out of pocket has not been much. It varies from each casting appt. Hope this helps...are you considering changing docs? or are you just wondering about the differences? Also, how is Jack??? is he eating any better? is he making it okay in his cast with it being so tight? For all of you that are going to be there the 26-28, I hate that I am going to barely miss you!!! Maybe eventually we all could be there the same time Misty and Haley " *\\o/* San *\\o/* " wrote: For those who are treated by Dr. Khoury - can you tell me a little about the casting process?
