Guest guest
My son Braden just got his first cast done in SLC on Tuesday. Wow - what an amazing team they have there. I feel so fortunate to have learned about Dr. D'Astous and Mike Pond. They really are the best of the best. Bradens curve was 40 degrees prior to casting and they were able to get it to 33 degrees with the cast. This was not quite as much as I had hoped for but as my husband keeps reminding me, it is almost 25 percent better already! Braden was the first casting of the day - 8am, so that was nice that he didn't have to go too long without eating or drinking. I brought our portable DVD player and his Baby Einstein DVD's with us and they were a lifesaver. He absolutely loves watching these movies right now so it was a huge help. I brought it back into pre-op with us after they gave him the Versed and that kept him entertained. And fortunately, he was loopy enough from that so he didn't cry when they took him away. (I was the one crying like a baby!) They came and got us right as he was waking up and I again brought the DVD in. He just layed on me and watched that until they let him go back to his room. I have to say, that first day was rough with him coming out of the drugs - he just wanted mommy and to go back to sleep but because the nurses were coming in every 30 minutes he kept getting awoken and that just made it worse. But, by the afternoon, he was ready to go for a wagon ride and even wanted to play ball. He was out walking around that night - a little slower than normal but still walking. By the next day, he was ready to go. He woke up in the morning and the first thing he said was " ball " . He played most of the day and was able to figure out how to bend over and pick things up. We stayed one more night but probably would not have needed to. We got home on Thurday afternoon and ever since then, he is so much happier. He is still struggling with rolling over and sometimes cant get up when he is laying down but for the most part, he is getting around well. It certainly helps to be home where he is comfortable. This was such an emotionally draining week but I am so thankful that he is adapting as well as he is. Thanks everyone for the support and encouragement. I am glad things went smooth for you and Braden is adjusting well. Where is his curve and what is the RVAD and rotation? Where do you travel from? We are in San Diego. Maybe someday our paths will cross. Congrats on getting Braden excellent care. ~ and Update on Braden - SLC My son Braden just got his first cast done in SLC on Tuesday. Guest guest
Congratulations Miranda - it sounds like everything went really well!! Isn't it a relief when you're back into your 'routine' somewhat? Aren't those Baby Einstein videos great?? My (17 mo) just loves them and they are a real life-saver. Back-yard-i-gans and the 'wiggles' seem to work too, but Baby Einstein is the best! I was thinking of writing them to let them know that they've helped us through cancer, chemo, PT, and now casting.
