Guest guest
Reading all the posts are always motivational. Ive eaten well the past three days but have yet to start the excersize routine again. Until today. I'm going to do my weight routine when my son takes his nap. I realize now more than ever is the time to do this. I had my sons belated two year chec up yesterday and while he isn't OVERWEIGHT, he is in the 95% for weight and only 75% for height on the pediatric charts. So they want me to cut him back to 2% or skim milk and only 2-3 cups a day so that it doesn't become a problem if him being overweight in the future. That horrified me. He doesn't eat junk food but he DOES drink a bit too much milk. He is an active baby so i'm hoping that this small change will help stabilize his weight and help his height catch up to him. They said it could just be his build but it scares me because after the age of eight I was an overweight kid then soon after that an obese kid. That was from eating whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. My son is active so i'm not worried about that, but maybe I will do the milk cut back and just make sure we get outside more everyday. I already try and get him to eat alot of the stuff I eat anyway. Eggs and turkey bacon with whole grain toast, string cheese, non-instant oatmeal, chicken, beef, pork, corn, beans, sweet potato, whole grain waffles, whole wheat pasta, apples, oranges, bananas, whole grain crackers, 2% cheese, and all the other body for life type foods. He doesn't drink juice either. Anyway, this was kind of a wake-up call for me. Time to make sure that we are always having well balanced meals. I know it won't always be perfect but I can try. Like yesterday, husband wanted chinese buffet on the way home from the drs. He ate whatever he wanted, and I got some type of grilled chicken and some beef with broccoli and some strawberries and grapes. It wasn't what I'd consider EXACTLY a bfl meal as I don't know what the chicken was grilled in, but it wasn't what I'd call a free day meal either. I had no rice or noodles with it because they only had white or fried rice and the noodles are whatever the noodles are LOL. But I can try and plan on that not happening very often. Also, from now on on my actual free days I'm not going to go completly hog wild, just pick maybe a dinner and dessert that I want and call it good. Guest guest
Hi Alyssa, You are a good Mom. How do I know? The reaction your having to his checkup is healthy and motivated by love more than fear. The fear got you started ( " They said it could just be his build but it scares me because after the age of eight I was an overweight kid then soon after that an obese kid. " ) But the love is what motivating you to step up and make the changes to his routine and yours. He wont have to suffer being a fat kid because your there to teach him that food is fuel. How does it feel to be the one to break the cycle? :-) The food your choosing for him is great. Since your choosing the same for yourself you are setting a stellar example. You realize how powerful food is because you've struggled with it for a long time. He won't have to because -of -you. Way to go! Tiea Alyssa wrote: Reading all the posts are always motivational. Guest guest
Actually, the AAP recommends lowfat or reduced fat milk for children over 2 yrs old. They need whole fat before age 2 but after that they can enjoy lower fat milk. I really don't think you should be concerned. More activity and more water & healthy foods is always a good plan. Take care, Jami >> nap. I realize now more than ever is the time to do this.
