Hi everyone,

My name is and I'm new to the board and also to BFL (this is

week 1 for me). I'm not new to cardio (although I am new to HIIT and

boy has it kicked my arse) or weight training in general but I never

saw any consistent results so I'm doing BFL to drop body fat and

change my body composition.

My question is this: I know BFL advocates doing cardio on an empty

stomach, first thing in the morning. I've been doing this when

possible (some days it just isn't because I have to be at work at 6

am, on these days I follow the rules and make sure I've been fasting

for at least three hours before working out) and waiting for an hour

afterward before eating. That's fine. My question is if you ladies

also do your strength training on an empty stomach. I know the book

says you can/should do this if you're looking to drop body fat, which

I am, but anecdotally it seems my performance is much better if I have

a small protein/carb meal beforehand (even if it's just a shake or a

bar).

Thanks in advance,

R.

If you're someone who feels shaky, weak or nauseous weight training on an

empty stomach, you're MUCH better off eating a little something. Having a

killer strength workout will get you better results than having a lame

but fasted strength workout. :-)

If you can do all of your workouts fasted without having your intensity

suffer, that's fine. But if you feel better and train harder with food, by

all means, have some food. The meal timing, empty stomach, waiting an hour

thing is only a teeny contributor to results. The big picture of what you do

for the other 23 hours is what really matters.

One thing that works for a lot of people is to eat before and immediately

after weights (feed muscle) and to do cardio on an empty stomach and wait an

hour (starve fat).

Thanks, . That's pretty much what I've been doing -- doing cardio on an

empty stomach and waiting an hour afterwards to eat, eating before weights and

having a protein shake afterwards (and I mean RIGHT afterwards, definitely

within 15-20 minutes) to feed the muscle.
