Katy is under GOSH gastroenterology, has been for 7 years .As we are

not satisfied with there care re her gut.How can we get a referral to

DR Fell.Do I need my GP to support this.Or do I just ask GOSH to

refer.Do we have the right to a second opinion even if it's outside

our health authority.I've looked on the patients charter and it said

you need GP to support it.Wondered if anyone knew anything different.

Thanks Sharon.

---Hi Sharon

I dont know the position legally but when I first asked for a referral

to a gastro our paediatrician sent us to Radcliffe hospital in

Oxford. The gastro there was not helpful at all and when I discussed it

with our paed she suggested we get a second opinion, I cant swear on it

but I think her words were " youre entitled to a second opinion " . I

suggested Dr Fell and she agreed to refer us. I think though that your

GP can also refer to Dr Fell as opposed to supporting a referral, but

I'm not 100% sure.

Not sure this was any help at all really!

Tom’s

paediatrician referred him. we went to her and not the

GP as she is generally more sympathetic. I suppose you should go to the person

most likely to support you. Sara

You will not get GOS to refer. They are a Tertiary Referral hospital

which means they are the end of the referral line!! they take complex

cases from other hospitals who cannot deal well with them.

You will have to persuade your G.P or go privately.

-Thanks ,Sara and Celia,

I think I'll have to try to persaude GOS to treat her.We have had a

chat with Dr Balzola who has reviewed her Endoscopy slides of her

colonoscopy, she had taken in GOS in 2005. He felt she should start

Pentasa .I can't imagine the GP will prescibe as they tend to think

of GOS as God.We don't see the Paed as she has never shown any

interest.

All I want is for her to have the treatment she needs. If the NHS

won't help,I'm worried to give her medication Dr Balzola recommends

without monitoring and advise in this country ,as she is so very

sensitive to stuff .
