Kept my date with D.!

This morning I did 3 workouts from Next Move (a WW intermediate level workout DVD with Dozois). I did the lower body, upper body and cardio core workouts, each one is 20 minutes long. I love her Ultimate Cardio Workout on this DVD but have never done any of the strength workouts (there's one more too, Total Body Toning). They were primarily compound moves and you do a circuit of a bunch of different exercises then repeat it but the 2nd time around she tweaks each one a bit, adding difficulty. For example, in the upper body workout you do plain pushups for the first circuit. In the second one, she has you put your hands on your dumbbells, go down and then as you push up, take the weight in your hand and rotate your whole body (like a side plank). Sometimes the movements seemed too fast for me but that could also be because I wasn't used to the compound exercises she was doing and needed more time to get my muscles used to the movements (there's no time to build up muscle memory because they are short workouts without a lot of reps for each one). In the upper body workout she had you doing alternating hammer curls with light weights (I had 5s) to a fast tempo. I had the weights under control but misjudged where my face was and smacked myself in the lip with one as that started. OUCH! It wasn't bleeding though, just fat for a while! I did better with it the second time through.

A lot of the exercises in all 3 workouts combined upper and lower body and in the lower body one she tells you you're going to work your shoulders too and you do. The Cardio Core Workout was all standing without weights or any other equipment and definitely was a cardio workout too! I'm not sure how much my core really got from it because I didn't feel it like I do floor work but it was still a good workout. I didn't love most of the upper and lower body workouts though. I get frustrated easily with compound exercises. These were very functional though which made me want to keep plowing through them and because of that, I'll definitely want to do these again to see if the movements become more automatic. I will use heavier weights for most of the workouts next time too. I used 5s and 8s and they were good to learn the movements with but for most of it I could go heavier because there are not a lot of reps. 5s were just right for the shoulder work in both upper and lower body though. I managed to burn over 300 calories doing these workouts in spite of them being primarily strength workouts (because of the lower body and the cardio core workouts primarily). My heart rate was in my cardio training zone for over 17 minutes too (and was much higher it during a lot of the cardio core workout) which surprised me since I didn't expect it to be there at all.

I think for short workouts that are pure strength training, I'll stick with Tamilee Webb's I Want That Body workouts because they are much more challenging from a strength perspective but I liked these for their emphasis on functional fitness so I think it would be good to blend both styles into my workout routines. I didn't love the workout today but I might in the future so this is a keeper (it is for the 20 minute cardio workout anyway).

Hi !

Woo-hoo! Way to hit your workout, again! I know what you mean about

functional fitness - I sort of like it, sort of don't, heh. I love

my core secrets workouts, which mostly functional fitness, but I

don't do them very often. And now that I have SOOOO many more

workotus than I ever did when I used those, who knows how often I'll

do them. I think I jotted down a week rotation with them in

February, though. ;)

Every time you mention Tamilee, it makes me want to try my Tamilee

workouts, since you seem quite fond of her! I think I may have her

penciled in for this coming summer sometime, LOL! Though, I think I

have one cardio workout of hers I should try sooner than that! :)

Over-planner,

Sara

i defiantly see her in a new light since she put out her best body workouts with her message about her son's autism.even those that seem to have the best life struggle with something close to home. but she makes some awesome workouts. ldy_solana's fitness blogldy_solana's domainScouting for All Too many people spend money

I like compound exercises, and personal trainers use them with their

clients quite a bit, I notice.

Isn't Dozois just adorable?

This sounds like a good workout, great job !

She is great, I really like her workouts. I have a love/hate relationship with compound exercises. I like strength training partially because it is usually no-brainer stuff but with compound exercises I have to remember a series of movements or ask my arms to do something while also telling my legs to do something else at the same time and that feels too much like choreography. I like how they work my body though and help keep it strong and healthy for my daily tasks.

Thanks for the encouragement, !

Hi Sara!

Thank you!!

You are cracking me up with your super planned rotations! I can barely plan a week in advance let alone what seems to be an entire year (or more?)!! I do like Tamilee a lot. She puts together challenging but fun workouts. Some people don't like her, they find her a bit smug, I think, but she doesn't bug me. Let us know when you do one of her workouts and how you like her!

I felt the same way. I liked her before but the message on those DVDs made her so human and made me respect her so much more, not just because she has a child with autism but because she's so honest about how her struggle to help him initially affected her own fitness routines and life. (For those who haven't heard, I think she says she actually quit working out for a while and like so many of us, forced herself to get back to it.)

oh yes i couldn't believe it when she said she got out of shape b/c i couldn't really see out of shape. but it does happen. in fact tonight was super rough and i wound up eating bowl of big cheez-its and some turkey hill ice cream(soft serve vanilla with red venice icee). just can't help it sometimes you don't wanna work out you eat comfort food which is not always healthy for you. but been there LOL i know how she feels. ldy_solana's fitness blogldy_solana's domainScouting for

Hi ,

Yeah, I confess - I have all of 2009 penciled in already, LOL! What

happened was that I was getting so many new workouts so fast that I

started to feel overwhelmed and didn't know what to do when - when I

was just picking things a day or a week at a time. I ended up having

SO many workouts to try that I started writing down a plan in my

cheapy little purse size calendar, and it sort of got out of hand

after that. ;)

So, though I feel kind of nutty about it, I also get a feeling of

control, and my madness also helps me feel more secure that I'll stay

on the wagon this time. I mean, I even transferred the workout plans

to my big wall calendar in my gym! So, since I know that even with

all of 2009 planned, I will still have more workouts to try (and

still buy them!) I figure I HAVE to stay on track for at least a year

or two more, right?? ;)
