Hi

Sally, I have never heard of fast release and slow release melatonin. We just

have melatonin! Have they got other names or do you know where I can get the

(presumably) slow release one? Thanks for posting this, SARA

sleep!!

Hi, my brother brought me a stack of scientific papers including the

full text of this one. It describes the awful sleep of the autistic

children, their upset circadian rhythms and how a combination of fast

release melatonin put them to sleep and timed release melatonin kept

them there. They did this for two years with no problems and when they

stopped the majority of the children kept sleeping -- some of them

didn't so they put them back on the melatonin. The paper is really a

how-to guide. If anyone would like a copy to take to their doctor and

ask for a personal trial, then mail me your address off-list and I will

send one

xx Sally

Center of Pediatric Sleep Disorders, Department Developmental

Neurology and Psychiatry, University of Rome " La Sapienza " , Via dei

Sabelli, 108 00185, Rome, Italy. flavia.giannottiuniroma1 (DOT) it

Long-term effectiveness of controlled-release melatonin in 25

children, aged 2.6-9.6 years with autism without other coexistent

pathologies was evaluated openly. Sleep patterns were studied using

Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) and sleep diaries at

baseline, after 1-3-6 months melatonin treatment and 1 month after

discontinuation. Sleep diary and CSHQ showed a more problematic

sleep in autistic children compared with controls. During treatment

sleep patterns of all children improved. After discontinuation 16

children returned to pre-treatment score, readministration of

melatonin was again effective. Treatment gains were maintained at 12

and 24-month follow-ups. No adverse side effects were reported. In

conclusion, controlled-release melatonin may provide an effective

and well-tolerated treatment for autistic children with chronic

sleep disorders.

Sara, I don't think you'll like this idea but could you do a trial of less GABA? I read that if they get too much it works in the opposite ay - maybe he is all stored up now?

I think it must be the way they are made up by the (presumably)

pharmaceutical company. The research comes from Italy and there

melatonin is freely on sale but the paper makes the point that it is a

pure sort -- compounded in these two particular ways. I have heard of

timed release melatonin sometimes from the States, mostly people

complaining that it doesn't work. Why don't I send you a full copy of

the paper and you take it to your friendliest doctor and try and get the

stuff from him. Fast release sends you to sleep ...........timed release

mimics the rise of melatonin through the early part of the night and

then its slow fall until you wake 10 hours later. Together they worked

for everyone in the study
