Guest guest
I was just informed my 3 year old son needs an osteotomy to correct his hip dysplasia. The surgery involves cutting his femur and fusing a bone from his hip in order to place the femoral head more snugly in the acetabulum (ball and socket joint). Recovery would mean a minimum of 6 weeks in a body cast and then the rehab with latature stating 6 mo-1year recovery for a none CMT pt that is. So needless to say this is all very scary. Have any of you had this type of surgery or any CMTer you know had this surgery. My son's neurologist immediately called the orthopedist with her concerns but she is out of town for another week. The orthopedist and neurologist are to consult and determine what is in 's best interest. He is at risk for avascular necrosis and would be crippled as an adult without the surgery. Of course we will do anything now to prevent pain and dysabaling condition Any experience or info would be appreciated.
Guest guest
Both my children were diagnosed right at birth (literally) with hip dysplasia (also before we knew they both had CMT). One child was braced and the other was body casted for 6-8 weeks. I recall looking at x-rays when they were born and there appeared to be no socket joint whatsoever. With the bracing/casting the problem seemed to correct itself (so far). As with anything major I would get a second opinion and see if they are familiar with CMT (and that hip dysplasia seems more common with CMT). Thanks, Geoff in Edmonton
