Guest guest
Hi Sara, Thanks for you response on the D3 question :-) We've used VSL#3. I did really like how easy it was to give large doses of CFUs. I was using two packages a day. We didn't see any gains from it, but we very rarely do, so that is not the criterion for me on whether to continue using it. There was an interesting study done showing how VSL #3 was used to make sourdough bread and that bread is tolerated by people with celiac. It seems to me that celiac is a result of chronic low levels of certain bacteria--same as for our kids who have gut and food issues. So, although my son doesn't have reactions to gluten any longer, I do want to keep him topped up with as much good bacteria as possible. I would certainly recommend VSL as a good probiotic to rotate in. Sorry can't help you where to buy it--I got mine in Canada. Anita > > > Has anyone used this? Guest guest
Just a cautionary note on VSL, Dr. Usman has reported that SOME kids appear to get immune problems while on VSL. Anne Brynn, on here and A-M did find an interesting study, which I can ask her to post, that found some strains in VSL causing a tamping down of the Th1 side of the immune system. That's what we found here, while on VSL, one infection after another while we were wracking our brains trying to figure out what was causing it. For other children it does not seem to cause any problems and I would think it depends on where there immune system sits presently. For example if the Th1 side of immunity was too strong in a particular kid, this would be good, not bad but if the Th1 side was functional, or weak, not so good. This problem we had with VSL was not apparent immediately, probably took about 2 months to appear and it quickly dissipated once off the VSL. Re: Re: VSL there is some science on sourdough to the effect that celiacs can eat it VSL or not because all the gluten is degraded by the fermentation process.xx sallyAnita wrote:>> Hi Sara,>> Thanks for you response on the D3 question :-)>> We've used VSL#3. Guest guest
Thanks a lot for that, Jane. I think we’re going to give it a go. He had symptons that indicated diet infringement, but new it wasnt! we stuck with it and are now glad we did! So be prepared, just incase, also I get mine from the states and so far havent been charged VAT when they come in, so they work out much cheaper and they arrive with ice packs and very quickly. Guest guest
Hi , thanks for that. That’s quite a scary thought, not sure I want to put Tom through that. Guest guest
Sara, Many kids use VSL without any problems, just wanted to alert people so if they saw more than one infection in a row they could figure it out a lot more quickly than we did. She got walking pneumonia followed by her first strep infection ever followed by two bouts of bronchitis. She missed 10 days of school in the first 6 weeks of Kindergarten and the school wasn't exactly happy. Not to mention it shot her IgE from a very respectable 6, to 113!!!! Then the ped was not happy. It did however get rid of any trace of yeast :-) But it's not a good probiotic for her. In case anyone doubts a probiotic CAN have an impact on your immune system, we don't. But it works both ways. I don't mean to scare people, many use it with no problems at all. Guest guest
We had some of that, too, but honestly, I think it was kind of good. My son had clearly been a strep carrier for a long time (OCD/perseverative behaviors) but never had diagnosable strep by throat swab until he was on VSL for a bit. Then we had back to back bouts of strep throat, got antibiotics, and saw an immediate decrease in the behaviors. I think it got my son's immune system thinking. Maybe we were T1 heavy, not sure. Guest guest
Thanks Anne. I’ll give it a go, I think.
