Guest guest
Ok - I know all children will act somewhat differently at school - but I just came back from a meeting with my son's teacher who told us that she when she asks my son either closed-ended or open-ended questions he will sometimes respond with an answer that makes absolutely no sense (to her). He used to do more of this when he was younger (he has a mixed receptive and expressive language delay), usually when he could not understand what was being asked of him but at home it's disappeared. We've been chelating him in long rounds and at home we are seeing lots of increases in his understanding of language, as well as a marked increase in complexity in what he says. However, school is seeing very little of this improvement and I am puzzled by it. We're trying to get our heads round the discrepancy between the two places - he is very settled at school, and very happy there - sometimes we sing songs in the car on the way there about his classmates, who he so looks forward to seeing. He is crazy about his teacher - he is chatty all day long and by all appearances *likes* and *wants* to connect with others there. He is four years old - and with the language delay it will be impossible to talk to him about what is going on at school that makes him less interested/able to talk to people/answer questions etc. So we are trying to think of who might be able to help us figure this out. Do ed psychs help with this sort of thing - or better to speak to a child psychologist? We're in Hertfordshire, if anyone has any resources up this way...
