Oh, bless him, Georgina. I think constipation affects most of our kids negatively.

I think it varies widely from child to child as far as the dose of Oxypowder. One thing to know is that it isn't toxic because it isn't absorbed into the bloodstream, so don't be concerned about giving him 4 or 5 of them. We've gone up to 4 in a day I think and our son is about the same size.

I started slowly with about 1 caps I think, just to gauge my son's reaction. I think it used to take about 3 to get a good blast of clear out.

I've recently added Fibresure with great success to increase the fibre in 's diet. It is flavourless and can be stirred into a drink or even used in baking. So far we've not had any negatives with it. You can buy it in Boots. (3 for 1 sale on now.)

Also, oxy works better for us if given with something acidic such as a squeeze of lemon juice. That makes a huge difference.

Best wishes, I'm sure others will give you advice as well.

Darla

Hi there, can anyone help me? My darling son aged 3 1/2 is really suffering with constipation. We have been given lactulose and small suppositories by our GP and we are trying to add much more fibre and veg into my sons diet (he hates fruit as it is too sweet). His behaviours are terrible when there is a poo looming and he will hold on until we have a backup situation. I was told about OxyPowder and was wondering if this might help but am not sure on the dosage required for a little boy weighing 3 stone. We use digestive enzymes and probiotics but little else until our first DAN appt in Feb.

Hi

Georgina,

I’m

so sorry that your little boy and you are suffering. It shouldn’t have to

be like this.

What

are the suppositories that your doctor is giving you? I don’t know

anything about lactulose and so hopefully someone else will comment.

Getting

the dosage right for Oxypowder is really hard, it’s not done by the child’s

weight, more by the type and amount of poo you see coming out!!! It is,

therefore, best done through a practitioner although I would be happy to tell

you what our practitioner told us to look for. Please phone any time on 01752

265085.

There

is an NHS doctor that people are getting referrals to nowadays, Dr Fell of Chelsea and Westminster, I think. I’ll

give you his details if you want to ask your GP or paediatrician for a

referral.

Sorry

this isn’t more help but please phone if you think it will help,

SARA

Georgina,

Oxypowder, IMO, is an excellent way to deal with constipation. My son

weighed about 40 pounds when we started it and it required about 4 a

day when he was at his worst. After that, one every second day helped

to keep him regular.

There is a file on constipation in our files section that might help

you figure out better the cause of the constipation as I don't believe

that oxypowder, as great as it is, deals with the cause.

If he's backed up nothing else may help. So you have to keep things

moving, absolutely imperative. I have never heard of a negative

reaction to Oxypowder and it's not absorbed as such. Try him on a half

cap and see what happens. Tom has two or three a night every night.

Without them life is misery! Tom weighs 50 lbs and is 9 years old.

Most seem to need about 4 or even 5 a night over three nights or so to

clear a proper backing up and then a maintenance dose of 3 or so.

Need to give last thing with a little lemon juice seems to make more

effective. Doesn't seem to cause any spasms such as you'd get with a

laxative.

I took lactulose on prescription after Eddie was born 4 years ago.

It helped with the awful constipation but made other problems much

worse. I didn't know at that point that I had yeast and clostridia

(like so very many of our children.)

The lactulose was extremely sweet and I had to take quite a bit

before it worked. It made me feel pretty horrible and the (sorry to

be graphic) but the wind was very uncomfortable. For me it was

dreadful stuff and so not good for my yeast problem - I went on to

have much worse bowel problems. I've not heard of lactulose

recommended from any parents treating autism - but there may be some

about...

I've taken oxypowder several times in the last 2 years and it is MUCH

MUCH better (no discomfort and yet more effective). And we are

mostly so short of magnesium anyway.

Our little boy Eddie has taken 6 oxypowders at night when he was

loaded/impacted - but like others we built up carefully. There is a

really good information sheet on the oxypowder website eg

http://www.oxypowder.com/faq. We also had great help from Jean

Muscroft - and now this group too :-)

Best wishes,

Sandy

Nicola,

Dr H told me that lactulose promotes yeast overgrowth because all it

is is basically sugar and that would be food for the yeast! So your

son was probably drunk on excessive yeast!!!

I mentioned this to the Paed at the time who said this was nonsense.

(like I didn't know my own son!!) But when I mentioned it to Dr H

months later - he agreed that it could well have had this effect on

Luke - though I can't recall his reason why.

Thanks for all the advice I have immediately stopped giving Lactulose

and have just received some OxyPowder. Adam is a little better after

managing his 'first ever' poo on the toilet last night....hoorah, I am

so proud.

Thank you to everyone who has helped on this epic journey, I am hoping

to do more BioMed this year so might be on here a lot so I will

apologise now if I become a nag.

Thanks for your help Sara, the suppoitories are Glycerol 1mg, are

they ok to use? We used them once and he poo'ed within 1 minute but I

felt it was too abrupt and scary for him. I am going to try the

OxyPowder just plucking up courage, reading up on it with a large

glass of wine in hand tonight ready for tomorrow. Although we have

had a result I don't want it to happen again if I can possibly help

it.

Thanks again
