Guest guest
This part also caught my eye because of something rather strange, at least to me, that just occured. I went to register at a surgery and in the forms I was to fill out it asked about ethnicity (white British, white other, mixed Asian, etc). I was a bit shocked to tell the truth. I've never seen anything like that in Canada, and it made me wonder why--good intentions I'm sure, but really how much can you know about a person medically based on the answer to that question? Maybe I'm missing something? >>Any official forms in the UK ask you the same question, local authority job applications, benefits, doctors hospital schools all sorts. Have you found out if you can claim Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and Carers Allowance? DLA is a nightmare form being negative about your kid, I am doing one now, you have to do it in shifts because its so depressing but if you are jolly and only write the good stuff you get bugger all. These two benefits at higher rate are worth £500+ per month so cover your supps if you can get it, actually I would just apply on line and see what happens Click here: Disability Living Allowance : Directgov - Disabled people You have to get the DLA award before you can ask for CA I think because CA is only middle and higher rate of DLA Mandi x
Guest guest
Anita, that’s all good stuff, at least in theory. It’s a way of checking that doctors, businesses, others who deal with people are not treating them unfairly due to ethnicity. Don’t know how they check at a doctor’s but on job application forms, it’s more obvious. SARA This part also caught my eye because of something rather strange, at least to me, that just occured. Guest guest
It's got to do with customer service, to make sure they are serving the needs of everyone. It gets better. I wanted o set up a small business so I called up the relevent government agency. Was asked name, rank, serial number and when they wanted to know what race I was I told them to stuff it and got off the phone. And it gets even better, my daughter brought a form back from the charity that she has chosen to work for to satisfy requirements for the Duke of Edinburgh Award. She was asked to tick of whether she was a gay lesbian, male homosexual or hetersexual. Bearing in mind she is 14, we were naturally very piqued that she was even confronted with such questions. Gee aren't kids supposed to have a childhood. I phoned up the charity, complained and the questions will probably be rescinded nation-wide for anyone under 14. Framkly even as an adult, what business is it of anyones BTW have they started this ID campaigning in Canada. I heard the Canadian parliament is anxious to bring them in over there too. (grrrr, don't get me started on that score....) I think there is far too much prying into private business everywhere, here, Europe and North America..... Guest guest
P.S the BBC reported that on any given Sunday in the UK, a person is caught on CCTV approximately 300 times..... Framkly even as an adult, what business is it of anyones Okay...that is the wierdest thing I've heard in a long, long time. I think if faced with those things, we should encourage our kids to tick off all three and add a fourth box: My mom will be calling you to discuss how invasive, stupid, and none of your business this is! Really, all of this has to fit into my top five of truly peculiar things (at least to an outsider) about the UK! I really can't see how quizzing everyone on their ethinicity (and emphasizing it at every turn) does much to promote a culture of acceptance. I am expecting the surgery to phone me up, BTW, as I didn't complete the part about vaccinations. I'm sure that will become an issue. Guest guest
those queries about ethnicity legally are optional and are to ensure equal opps, which is a good thing. All government agencies and most charities have to demonstrate that they're following it. Stops the Old Boys network. Most people are happy to define themselves in order to comply, some aren't they can't legally insist. It now comprises ethnicity, sexual orientation and disability. Generally it demonstrates a " spread of representation " , or that's the idea. > > > In a message dated 22/01/2008 09:50:34 GMT Standard Time, > mysuperteach@... writes: > > This part also caught my eye because of something rather strange, at > least to me, that just occured.
