Jen,

Sorry, I honestly don't remember the one my Mom used all the time. But I believe it was the yellow one. They are color coded for kids I guess. Personally, I was feeling stuffy and full of goo this morning myself, so I looked in the medicine cabinet and still had the purple one that is cough and sore throat. It said decongestant, so I took it and feel so much better. Here, I'll just type what it says:

Pain Reliever, Fever Reducer, Nasal Decongestant, Cough Suppressant. Contains Acetaminophen, Dextromethorphan HBr, and Pseudoephedrine HCl. For kids 6-12 they should take two teaspoons, so I double that since i'm about 2 times as big as my 14 year old DD. The grape tastes terrible (gin and 7Up would be better, LOL), but it is better then feeling bad all day.

I've been struggling to find time to eat between my morning interpreting job(s) and my afternoon/evening tutoring job. Tomorrow will be my busiest day of the week. I will be eating breakfast when I get home in the morning then during my 1 to 3pm student I will lunch....during the 4 to 7pm class I will eat healthy snacks such as nuts.I don't feel well enough to exercise but I'm hoping that by Thanksgiving I will. My foot feels fine and I'm anxious to try walking on my treadmill to see how it is doing. I'm going to look at this sinus infection as an opportunity to start over with my nutrition and start eating healthier foods. Hey Jen,If you have true sinus infection none of the OTC products you tried are going to work, by now it's probably a bacterial infection that needs an antibiotic...if the doctor/prescription option is too much $$ I'd stick with Sinucleanse (as long as it is saline based) and check WebMD.com

Vennitta (who's had some brutal sinus infections)

Do you remember the name of the Triaminic medicine? I don't want an antihistamine because I tried Zyrtec antihistamine and I got worse.

I looked online and Triaminic Chest & nasal congestion or Day Time Cold & Cough looked good.I also found Robitussin's Cough & Cold CF and Cough & Cold D.I'm just not sure which to get.

Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving! Jen

UGH! Jen, I hope you get to feeling better soon. What do you take for your sinuses? I found that I have to take Claritin and Advair for my allergies/asthma during the spring and fall when they get really bad so I don't get to feeling horrible from them. Maybe you need something for allergies to help you not get these each year?

you want guaffenesin (sorry about the spelling) as the active

ingredient. Robitussin makes a syrup that is strictly guaffenisin,

it might just be called expectorant. Warning, guaffenesin tastes

really bad no matter what " flavor " the syrup says it is. Mucinex

brand has guaffenesin as the main ingredient and you can get it with

or without the decongestant. It is cheaper without the decongestant

and the pills are smaller and easier to swallow. You can get it in

syrup form in the kid's section, it is grape, but still tastes pretty

bad. Mucinex tends to be more expensive than other brands, but I

think the various stores have their own generic brand of mucinex now.

What guaffenisin does is thins out the mucus so you may find that

your symptoms appear to be worse...ie, constant runny nose or blowing

more frequently than before. If the mucous is really thick, it kind

of stays gunked up in your sinuses so you want to thin it out to get

it moving out. You may want to add a decongestant to the mix to

help " dry " you up, but some doctors have mixed opinions on this

because it seems counterproductive, one med is working to thin out

the mucous, while the other med is trying to dry it up. My allergist

has had me take both and in my experience of many sinus infections, I

need to have both the expectorant and the decongestant. I know you

don't want to take an antihistamine, but you could try claritin or

the generic equivalent. I used to take zyrtec for years for my

allergies but had to stop because it made me too tired, I would take

it at night and feel like I was still drugged in the morning. My one

son can't take zyrtec because it makes him mean and nasty (I think

because it makes him tired). Claritin is supposed to be non-drowsy

and we take it and don't have problems with it.

Hope you are feeling better soon:)

I've all ready tried Claritin and it doesn't work for me.I got Robitussin Cough & Cold, so hopefully it will work. JenSubject: Re: TONYA this is OT about my sinus infectionTo: exercisevideos Date: Thursday, November 27, 2008, 10:10 PM

for a non-med remedy that works just as well as nasal sprays and

other sinus meds (according to Dr. Oz when he was on the Oprah show)

is the neti pot. Both my general dr and allergy dr also recommend

using a neti pot. My sister started using one because she can't take

meds due to breastfeeding and swears by it. It is basically a little

tea pot that you put warm sterilized water in and a special salt

water solution packet you mix in. You lean your head over a sink,

pour in one nostril and it goes up into your sinus cavities and then

drains out the other nostril. I've seen them at Walgreens and CVS in

the aisle with all the nose sprays, so you could probably get it at

most major drugstore chains and I've also heard health food stores

carry them too.

Here is a link the the segment I saw on the Oprah show (which I

usually only watch if Dr. Oz or his partner is going to be on)

that should help, since it has Guaifenesin in it (correct spelling).

I just got over a really bad sinus infection that started a few weeks

ago so I know how bad your must be feeling. If you try the neti pot,

let me know if it helped. I know I should use it, I just can't bring

myself to try it. According to Dr. Oz, the water should be at least

tepid and not cold, he said if it is cold, you'll feel like you are

drowning.

I use sinucleanse but I use the squeeze bottle instead of the neti pot because I think it's easier to use. It does help but there is A LOT of goo in my head so it can only get out so much. You should try it but keep the water warm and only use the amount of salt Dr. Oz said, otherwise your nose will burn. It's really not bad and if it helps, why not? JenSubject: Re: TONYA this is OT

about my sinus infectionTo: exercisevideos Date: Thursday, November 27, 2008, 10:38 PM

that should help, since it has Guaifenesin in it (correct spelling).

I just got over a really bad sinus infection that started a few weeks

ago so I know how bad your must be feeling. If you try the neti pot,

let me know if it helped. I know I should use it, I just can't bring

myself to try it. According to Dr. Oz, the water should be at least

tepid and not cold, he said if it is cold, you'll feel like you are

drowning.

I use simply saline that I spray into my noise and that is enough for

me right now. My sister used to use the squeeze bottles but prefers

the neti pot because she says it actually gets way up into your

sinuses while the squeeze bottles don't get up that far. I'm just a

big chicken but I do need to try the neti pot one of these days...

Hi Vennitta, FINALLY someone who understands! I'm hoping the Robitussin Cough & Cold CF will work, if not I probably won't try anything else otc. When I've got these sinus infections in the past I've gone to the Dr. and he gave me antibiotics but it didn't go away so I would have to go back and get more etc...and the nose spray or other med the Dr. gave me wouldn't work on these infections either. I'm concerned about using all of these different antibiotics and becoming immune to them so right now I'm sticking with the sinucleanse and Robitussin. How long have had a sinus infection? The longest I had was a year...it never went away. The worst one I had was 3 or 4 months with bronchitis, I wanted to

die. Jen

I can't taste (food barely has any flavor) or smell my food so that pretty much KILLS my appetite. I've been struggling to find time to eat between my morning interpreting job(s) and my afternoon/evening tutoring job. Tomorrow will be my busiest day of the week. I interpret from 7:45 to 9:15am then I get home at 10am, rush and tutor at the university from 11am to 4pm, then I sit in a sign language from from 4 to 7pm, after that I tutor a student for an hour.....that' s why it will be a busy day! I have a BIG container of barley soup with tons of veges to eat and my sweet-tooth disappeared which I'm very happy about.Well wish me luck! Jen

Hey Jen,I'm very much for natural remedies but an infection lasting a year is a problem. You have to find a way to get this bacteria out of your system, I'm worried that the bad bacteria is settling in your system. did you take the antibiotics completely i.e. finish the bottle? I went through a spell where I couldn't shake an infection, had to try a few antibiotics (doc didn't want to give me the strongest to start), to save my system I took probiotics midway between doses of antibiotics (when taken too close together probiotics undo antibiotics).

Maybe the more complicated neti pot is a good idea at this point, saline solutions are probably the best way to kick some bacteria a$$ :) and the net pot will pack a more powerful punch.

I also had bronchitis for about 4 months, doc called it chronic bronchitis (I think), aka walking pneumonia, so you keep fighting this thing

Hugs, V

You misunderstood my email. I haven't had this sinus infection for a year. I've had it since last Wednesday. In the past when I've had sinus infections that wouldn't go away, I did take all of the antibiotics but I was still sick and had to go back and get more...that's why I think the infection was caused by something else. The squeeze bottle I use IS a saline solution, it's the same difference as the neti except you squeeze the bottle instead of pour it. It goes up into my sinuses. I've read the directions and I follow them. Sinucleanse sells both a squeeze bottle and neti pot with saline solutions to use. Jen
