my neck is sore in all of the wrong places-probably from the crunches...have to watch it with those.

If you're not use to doing crunches, you will have soreness in your neck. I remember my neck hurting so bad for days after doing crunches. Once you get use to doing them, you won't get that soreness there anymore because you're neck will get use to it and your abs will get stronger, therefore not needing as much help from you neck :)))
