Guest guest
My heel has been hurting for over a week and Thursday I finally got in to see a podiatrist. I went to him before when one of my bunions began to hurt and he gave me a shot of cortisone. I guess I should start at the beginning before I go into what he found. My right heel for some reason started to hurt two weeks ago. It didn't hurt while I was playing volleyball, bowling or walking...it hurt when I took my shoes off or when I had my slippers on. There was also a bump on my heel and I noticed that my ankle was swollen. In the morning the swelling would go down but at night it would be all swollen again. I was VERY concerned about that bump though so I went to the foot doctor (podiatrist.) First thing he said when he saw me was..."Big bunion, small bunion!" I have a big bunion on my left foot and a small bunion on my right foot. Then he asked me questions about my pain and then took x-rays. He showed me the x-rays and told me that I have a "mouse" in my ankle joint! LOL - it's a bone chip lodged in my ankle joint. He said sometimes it works its way out, other times you have have to have an arthroscopic procedure to remove it. He said that I have a bone spur/heel spur on the back of my foot. And that bump on my heel is from Hanglund's deformity which causes the bone to enlarge (usually it's hereditary.) He told me that when bone is under pressure it responds to it by enlarging.... fun HUH? I also have bursitis caused by the enlarged bone pressing on the bursa. I thought GREAT not only do I have bunions on both feet, arthritis (he told me that a few years go) and NOW I have 4 more things wrong with my right foot, how fun NOT! He gave me a shot of a cortisone-like drug in my ankle and heel. He said that he can make inserts for my shoes. I don't want those though because I've had them before and they don't work and insurance doesn't pay for them....I can't afford to spend over $100 on something that probably won't work. He told me that sometimes the shots work or he could do surgery....I'm hoping that this shot or a couple of shots will do the trick. He prescribed an anti-inflammatory for the swelling and told me to come back in a week. I asked him when I can try exercising again and he said that I could try Friday or when it starts feeling better. It was still sore today (Friday) but hopefully it will a little better so that I can walk or do an exercise video/dvd this weekend. I can't lose weight/get in shape if I can't exercise. Stupid feet! I don't know why things always happen to me when I try to start exercising again!I'm NOT giving up though, I WILL exercise, eat healthy and LOSE this weight! Jen - oh my aching foot!!!
