Guest guest
Realistically, Dr Grim - can most people do this? I'm small and that's about what I eat in a day, but I can't imagine, say, the average man being able to eat that little and not be starving all day. > > > Yuk, I hate Spiro!! It makes me fat!! What if I don't take it, what will happen. I was recently told to stop taking the hydrochlorizide/water pill, and start taking spiro again, due to my vitimin d levels on the floor, and potassium levels. Guest guest
One thing that is being pushed to lose weight is using things like slim fast or that type of drink. Ensure is also one of the things they push. Some of the drinks have over 900mg of K but have 250 mg of NA in 8oz. Maybe for some can drink this in place of V8. It is a bit costly. > >> > > >> > > Yuk, I hate Spiro!! It makes me fat!! What if I don't take it, > >> what will happen. Guest guest
I find the whole idea of pushing enfoods like Ensure in the name of " health " to be ridiculous. Look at the Ensure ingredients list: Water, sugar (sucrose), corn syrup, maltodextrin (corn), calcium caseinate, high-oleic safflower oil, canola oil, soy protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, corn oil, calcium phosphate tribasic, potassium citrate, magnesium phosphate dibasic, natural and artificial flavor, soy lecithin, sodium citrate, magnesium chloride, salt (sodium chloride), carrageenan, choline chloride, potassium chloride, ascorbic acid, ferrous sulfate, alpha-tocopheryl acetate, zinc sulfate, niacinamide, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, cupric sulfate, vitamin A palmitate, thiamine chloride hydrochloride, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin, folic acid, chromium chloride, biotin, sodium molybdate, sodium selenate, potassium iodide, phylloquinone, vitamin D3 and cyanocobalamin. Why not just eat real food, in smaller amounts, instead? With the refined sugar, the artificial ingredients, and the high Omega-6 content, I cannot imagine any responsible " medical professional " pushing this junk on a patient. Yet many do. > > >> > > > >> > > Yuk, I hate Spiro!! It makes me fat!! What if I don't take it, > > >> what will happen. Guest guest
I'm pretty sure that nobody in this group *should* be eating that junk. This is why I find the DASH book to be almost un-navigable for me. It recommends processed junk foods like bagels, boxed cereal, granola bars, and microwave popcorn, as well as stuff loaded with artificial ingredients like bottled fat-free condiments. I wouldn't have touched that stuff before I was sick, and I'm not about to now! Sorry to rant but I read so much here about obesity and diabetes and other health problems in addition to the PA. Eating low salt and high K is all well and good, but I would think that in addition, eating only REAL food would be better. Okay, I'll step off my soapbox now. > > > > >> > > > > > >> > > Yuk, I hate Spiro!! It makes me fat!! What if I don't take it, > > > > >> what will happen. Guest guest
I am sticking to real food too, although i do use splenda sweetener in my homemade raspberry lemonade and coffee.. Just started to do DASH for real. However, there is no way I am gonna live on 1200 calories. I have 800 for breakfast alone, lol. I did walk for 45 minutes last night and I was able to handle that pretty good. I got a ton of weight to lose, so i guess we can just chip away at it one day at a time. I am going to try and walk at least 30 minutes everyday. ============================================================================45-Male-Caucasian, 5'9"- 230lbs, PA Diagnosed 2007 Suspected Hyperplasia-No tumors on CT - No AVS.Meds: 50mg Spiro, 25mg HCTZ, 40meg Potassium, 2400mg Calcium, 1000mg Magnesium, 100,000UI Vit D (weekly), 40mg OmeprazoleSide effects: Gynecomastia, stomach inflammationOther Diags: GERD, Hiatal Hernia, Metabolic Syndrome - PreDiabetic, Secondary Hyperparathyroidism caused by Renal calcium leak, Bone Cyct in left Femoral Head and Pelvis. Guest guest
I have some, but dont really like it. I put in on a piece of toast once and never got that negative exerience off my taste buds. lol alot of times I dont even use the raspberry sweetner, I just fresh squeeze 1/2 a lemon into a big glass of ice and add water. Then again, I like things tart. Love granny smith apples, sour kiwi's, etc. Cant really enjoy black coffee, so i have to add cream and sugar to that. I still drink a fair amount of Diet Dew and Diet Coke. I am not giving up everything becuase I know i will not stick with it for the long haul. ============================================================================45-Male-Caucasian, 5'9"- 230lbs, PA Diagnosed 2007 Suspected Hyperplasia-No tumors on CT - No AVS.Meds: 50mg Spiro, 25mg HCTZ, 40meg Potassium, 2400mg Calcium, 1000mg Magnesium, 100,000UI Vit D (weekly), 40mg OmeprazoleSide effects: Gynecomastia, stomach inflammationOther Diags: GERD, Hiatal Hernia, Metabolic Syndrome - PreDiabetic, Secondary Hyperparathyroidism caused by Renal calcium leak, Bone Cyct in left Femoral Head and Pelvis. Guest guest
> > I find the whole idea of pushing enfoods like Ensure in the name of " health " to be ridiculous. I totally agree! I do without and would rather starve. You do not want to know how many times I have gone without eating cause I don't want those chemicals and processed foods in my body. Can't even eat soy anymore as I get ill ande suspect it is because it is mostly now all GMO. Food should be produced to sustain us not to provide more money in the pockets of some major corporations shareholders as is the case now. With the way north americans eat we don't need to be enbalmed when we die. The worms won't touch us as it is we have so many food preservatives throughout our bodies. In spite of my pickiness, I still can't budge my weight under 194 lbs and I average less than 800 calories a day. Once spent eight days in the hospital on intake and output and when I was discharged they were befuddled as I had gained 15 lbs in one week eating what they call hospital food-and half of it I had threw up. Guest guest
I don't often post . . .but thought I would offer my encouragement. The question of this topic " Can most people do this (DASH)? " hit home to me. After contracting with Dr. Grim this past fall, one of the first things he focused on was DASHing. In June, 2010, I was suddenly hit with a wide variety of symptoms, including very labile blood pressure. I was experiencing wide swings throughout the day - my worst swing on record was 170/110 to 88/44 within 20 minutes. All of my symptoms exacerbated this past fall with elevated bp up to 220/120. My focus was to do anything and everything that Dr. Grim asked of me. One of the first things was to " DASH like my life depended on it " . . . as my life DID depend on it! I am allergic to certain foods (wheat, corn, white potatoes, flax). I try to avoid processed foods at home. I do go out to eat several times a week (I make sure I request NO salt, no sauce). I have been able to adapt to the concept of the DASH diet plan to a previous weight loss plan I was in and stick with it. I do not see DASHing as a hinderance, but rather a great help. The result: Conistently, my 24h urine Na ranges between 22-25 (ref range 28-272). My 24h K ranges between 263-309 (ref range 20-100). Dr. Grim feels that I do have PA and I am awaiting a referral to Stanford University. I am not currently on any medication and my symptoms, while not going away entirely, are not as drastic. What I have done is taken the basic concept of DASH and made it work for me. From www.dashdiet.org, here is what I need to get out of my daily diet: Type of food Number of servings for 1600 Calorie diet Grains and grain products (include at least 3 whole grain foods each day) 6 - 12 Fruits 4 - 6 Vegetables 4 - 6 Low fat or non fat dairy foods 2 - 4 Lean meats, fish, poultry 1.5 - 2.5 Nuts, seeds, and legumes 3 - 6 per week Fats and sweets 2 - 4 limited I eat a HUGE breakfast. Here is a typical day for me: Breakfast 1 oz rolled oats (cooks up to 6 oz) 8 oz non-fat plain greek yogurt 6 oz fresh fruit hot herbal tea Snack (mid morning and mid afternoon or sometimes after dinner) 10 oz glass of fresh orange juice or handful of raw almonds and raisins or dried prunes or Lara Bar (Cherry has around 400mg K) Lunch 4oz meat (I avoid processed lunch meats) 6oz cooked veg 6oz fruit Might sometimes have brown rice with balsamic vinegar Might sometimes have a baked sweet potato Dinner 4 oz meat 6 oz cooked veg 6oz salad with 2 TBLS fresh olive oil and balsamic to taste Might sometimes have brown rice with balsamic vinegar Might sometiems have a baked sweet potato Notes: I do not eat as many grains as what is recommended in the official DASH diet plan. I do not use sweetener on a regular basis .. .rather yucky at first, now I can taste the intense flavors of the foods. I do not do caffeine or sodas, just pure water and juices. I buy 20 year old balsamic vinegar and it is wonderfully sweet and not tangy like store bought vinegar (an indulgence well worth it!). What I am doing is giving my body the best fighting chance I can give it. Am I perfect? No. As evidenced this past Easter when I tore into the BBQ and suffered elevated bp up to 178/93. Each day is a new day and I have to remind myself that this is a fight for my life. Is DASH do-able . . .you bet your life it is! Thanks for the info you all share on this site! 50 yo w/female (5' 2 " 125 lbs), labile bp, elevated HHV-6 antibodies, 3x normal urine volume, low platelets, elevated bili, reynaud's. Episodic nausea, light headedness, numbness (hands, feet, face, tongue), nocturia, extreme thirst, sweats. No fluid retention, no metabolic syndrome. Awaiting endo appt. at Stanford. > > > >> > > > >> > > > > >> > > > >> > > Yuk, I hate Spiro!! It makes me fat!! What if I don't take it, > > > >> > > > >> what will happen. Guest guest
Great post , thank you. This looks a lot like mine - except I can't eat any grains except for rice (which I don't eat often because I don't need the empty calories!), and I can't have any fruit or sugar at all, so getting enough K will always be a challenge. I've given up on eating out. After the last time I went to a restaurant, clearly asked for no added salt, and ended up salt-bombed regardless, it's just not worth it! > > > > >> > > > >> > > > > > >> > > > >> > > Yuk, I hate Spiro!! Guest guest
Actually I don't, since I'm also insulin resistant and a potato causes my blood sugar to drop too low from the huge insulin release. Lots of almonds, avocado, mushrooms, and spinach though - those are the high K foods that don't give me trouble. > >> >> > > > >> > > > >> > > >> >> > > > >> > > > >> > > Yuk, I hate Spiro!! I am going to try and walk at least 30 minutes everyday.> >> > > > > >> > > > ============================================================================> >> > > > 45-Male-Caucasian, 5'9"- 230lbs, PA Diagnosed 2007 Suspected Hyperplasia-No tumors on CT - No AVS.> >> > > > Meds: 50mg Spiro, 25mg HCTZ, 40meg Potassium, 2400mg Calcium, 1000mg Magnesium, 100,000UI Vit D (weekly), 40mg Omeprazole> >> > > > Side effects: Gynecomastia, stomach inflammation> >> > > > Other Diags: GERD, Hiatal Hernia, Metabolic Syndrome - PreDiabetic, Secondary Hyperparathyroidism caused by Renal calcium leak, Bo
Guest guest
Hmm insulin resistance means insulin does not move sugar into cells. Therefore low BS should be rare. Guest guest
Here's how it was explained to me when I was diagnosed: my body responds to certain foods (carbs, basically) by putting out too much insulin, which in turn lowers my BS too much. I've passed out numerous times from this - my BS can drop as low as the 50s or 60s, which I understand to be dangerous. My HTN specialist thinks resolving the PA will resolve this. We'll see. > > > >> >> > > > >> > > > >> > > > > >> >> > > > >> > > > >> > > Yuk, I hate Spiro!! It makes me fat!! What if I don't take it, > > > >> >> > > > >> > > > >> what will happen. Guest guest
Insure is used mostly for elderly who are have problems eating enough to live. Tiped sad Send form miiPhone ;-)May your pressure be low!CE Grim MDSpecializing in DifficultHypertension I find the whole idea of pushing enfoods like Ensure in the name of "health" to be ridiculous. Look at the Ensure ingredients list: Water, sugar (sucrose), corn syrup, maltodextrin (corn), calcium caseinate, high-oleic safflower oil, canola oil, soy protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, corn oil, calcium phosphate tribasic, potassium citrate, magnesium phosphate dibasic, natural and artificial flavor, soy lecithin, sodium citrate, magnesium chloride, salt (sodium chloride), carrageenan, choline chloride, potassium chloride, ascorbic acid, ferrous sulfate, alpha-tocopheryl acetate, zinc sulfate, niacinamide, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, cupric sulfate, vitamin A palmitate, thiamine chloride hydrochloride, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin, folic acid, chromium chloride, biotin, sodium molybdate, sodium selenate, potassium iodide, phylloquinone, vitamin D3 and cyanocobalamin. Why not just eat real food, in smaller amounts, instead? With the refined sugar, the artificial ingredients, and the high Omega-6 content, I cannot imagine any responsible "medical professional" pushing this junk on a patient. Yet many do. > > >> > > > >> > > Yuk, I hate Spiro!! It makes me fat!! What if I don't take it, > > >> what will happen. Guest guest
I don't recall recommending bagels but will have to check. LoadD with salt. Some microwave popcorn is low Na and low fat. Tiped sad Send form miiPhone ;-)May your pressure be low!CE Grim MDSpecializing in DifficultHypertension I'm pretty sure that nobody in this group *should* be eating that junk.
