Subject: Tomato leaf EO, AB or whatever

Hi,

Is there a natural tomato leaf essence available anywhere? Would it be an EO,

AB or what.

I really like the scent but have been unsuccessful in finding it online.

What if I were to tincture it? Would I let the leaves dry up like a dried spice

and then add to pure alcohol? Any thoughts?

-Krisite

Hi Kristie,

Lol, you and I must have very similar tastes, because I searched for this too. I

believe it would be an absolute, and there was (maybe still is, but where?) a

tomato leaf abs. I have not tinctured it, but I made a very potent tomato leaf

cold enfleurage with palm oil that smelled just like the fresh leaves. However,

I have heard that the alkaloids/tomatine in the leaves would have high skin

irritating properties. I gardened tomatoes since I was a small child, and have

never had any issues with applying the enfleurage straight to my skin, but

others have talked about having rashes when handling the vines and leaves. That

being said, I believe I was told by the list mom Anya once, that if you do find

the abs, to ask if the alkaloids had been removed, and if they had, then it

should be a usable essence. The problem is that I have not found a supplier(

except one, whose products are too questionable to bother with) that carry any

tomato leaf abs. After

researching online for awhile, I was also told to be careful because tomato

leaf abs can be adulterated with spinach abs (although I don't think I would

mind having this either). I really, really want to find this absolute too, like

violet flower, wisteria, and others, its on my top want list to find. If you do

find some please let us know! Someone on here may have already found it, perhaps

they can point us both in the right direction? Best of luck! (Sorry, Kristie, I

have never tinctured this, so I can not tell you personally if this would work,

but again, perhaps someone here has?)

Hi, Aer:

Read my message to Kristie - I provided a link for the absolute.

Personally, I get itchy whenever I am around the tomato vines in the garden, so

I wouldn't use the absolute.

You may be able to infuse the leaves in grapeseed oil, however, this requires

time and patience and you need alot of tomato leaves.

I found that leafy greens such as parsley loose their scent when dehydrated.

You can try enfleurage which is really easier than you think.

Best Wishes,

Margo

I steam distilled my tomato plants at the end of the season when they were

highly fragrant a few years ago. I didn't get a drop of essential oil and the

hydrosol smelled awful.

I see there is a company who sells the absolute.

You might try an oil infusion by packing leaves in a jar and adding a nice oil

like hazelnut or jojoba and leave it in the sun for 15 to 21 days. Strain out

the leaves and check the strength of the scent. Pack again and re-infuse that

oil if it's not strong enough for you.

I have some tomato distillate I distilled last summer. I don't know that I care

for it much, but I am not really a perfumer. I'd be happy to send some to

someone for the cost of postage to someone who wanted to see if it works for

perfume. I want to know if its worth distilling again this summer. email me

Hello, tomato leaves smell goes from my childhood too. I do like this smell. And

have never met any abs or oil of tomatoe leaves. But I have just started with

the perfumary :-)

You told about spinach abs. It is available in Rissian online store.

The link http://www.aroma-beauty.ru/catalog/8/550/

I'm not sure the site has an English version, but Goggle can translate it)

I work with Google translation with French shops. It helps)

Hi Kristie

There's a dangerous alkaloid in tomato leaves, so don't tincture

them. The absolute is a bit hard to find. A reputable company

would carry the one that has had the alkaloid removed. I suggest

you search the messages here for a lot more info.

Ack! Margo, don't go to the evil lala ;-)

Much has been written here about that company and its

associates. Just search for it, and buyer beware. In our

message archives is a thread about them on Basenotes, but

Basenotes is down for server upgrade right now, so you can't view

it, but just see what members here have posted about them in the

meantime.

Dear Anya:

Thanks for the tip.

Sounds like Lala is the wicked witch of the West.

Actually, I stumbled upon the website while doing a search for another member.

Personally, I am allergic to Tomato leaves so I wouldn't be using this absolute

in my formulations.

Best Regards,

Margo
