The nice thing about ylang ylang, is that it about the most inexpensive floral Essence around...It comes in 3 fractional distillations, a complete, and an absolute....There's an 'extra' out there, also. I suppose there is a concrete...There is also a cananga EO, which is a different species type... Some folks love it, other folks dislike it on its own, or your affection for it may change with time... The beauty of ylang and/or cananga, is that it can boost the force, so to speak, of many more exotic florals, intensifying their effect... I have played around with many of the ylang oils, the absolute, and the cananga...I tend to gravitate to the ylang ylang 3.....but that is a purely personal preference.... I would say it is a definite must for a Natural Perfumer's palette... Care to All..... -- W. Bourbonais L'Hermite Aromatique A.J.P. (GIA) I happen to quite fond of ylang. I have the extra and the absolute and a sample of the complete at the moment. My favorite is the 3rd as well, . I feel it is the creamiest of all of them, but it's kind of hard to find. It was the one I would always get because it is the one that Aura Cacia offers, and Aura Cacia oils are readily available where I work, so it's easy for me to pick some up. Ylangs can also have sort of woody notes as well, kind of rosewood-like. The extra is sweeter and fruitier, with notes that remind me of banana and bubble gum(perhaps from methyl salicylate?). The absolute is smoother, more suave and sophisticated, and a tad fresher.  The complete reminds me most of the extra.   Ylang goes well with so many things; flowers, of course, but also spices, citrus, vanilla and balsams. I love it with lime, nutmeg, vanilla, benzoin, coconut . It goes with those oils like peanut butter and jelly-even better. And it's great with frangipani and champaca-they being all tropical flowers. The tropical trio. The island sisters.   Muy Tropical! It's also great to sweeten and smooth a blend that might be to sharp or pungent or dry or raw.

To me, it has the least of that bubble gum-like (for lack of a better word) overtone.
