Janet,

I feel for you........Sandi and have given you some great suggestions.

A Poise Pad inside the diaper(just like you would wear in your undies)AND a

thinner sanitary pad over the diaper up inside the cast worked for us. Can you

picture all this? We had really good results from this......out of 's 14

months of casting he only had a wet cast once. Every cast and child is different

though, but you may want to give it a try. It sure can't hurt.

Maybe tuck a pad up the back of the cast too. Be creative! LOL

Let me know if you need me to try to explain better.

gets wet from them wetting their diaper? it seems like there is really

no way to keep it from happening. i keep her changed regularly, but

esp. at night it gets wet. she is adjusting well, but this is our

biggest problem. she is having some reddness, but i know from her cast

on feet, that the skin just has to toughen up, the reddness is mainly

at the chest area, and it does seem so tight, it sort of makes her

belly " bulge " out.

Hi Janet,

I can sure sympathize about the tightness of the cast! We've had some

challenges with diapering, too. You do need to get at least some of the diaper

up under the cast, though, to help keep the cast dry. I do it this way: lay the

child down on top of the diaper so that the cast overlaps the top of the back of

the diaper by about an inch or so (like you're diapering the outside of the

cast). Then raise child up very slightly by the feet, slide your other hand

under the diaper, and use fingertips to mash the diaper into the cast. I do the

same for the top--lay the top of the diaper over the cast, overlapping by at

least an inch or so, then push the diaper under the cast. I've never been able

to tuck the sides under since Todd's casts have all been too tight to get

anything in there so we just do the best we can.

We have had some night-time leaks, too. We use a big Poise pad in the diaper,

which really helps. For a while, we also had to put a very thin regular maxi

pad over the front of his cast, wrapped over the bottom edge, but have not had

to do that in the current cast.

I'd try to feel inside to check for dampness. If you roll Sage on her tummy,

you should be able to stick your fingertip under the back to check how damp it

is. I think if it's not drying out, you probably ought to call and see what

suggests.

Good luck!

not say in my first post that the tape is all around the cast, and it is

fiberglass, (probally like all others?) i have not tried " stuffing " the diaper

up into the cast, it is so tight in the back that i am not sure if i can. i

would not say that it has gotton dramatically wet, but do you think i should

call b'ham? what would they do, just remove this one and start over??? i have

not tried taking all the tape off, cutting the shirt, then taping it back down,

i really was not sure if it was okay to do, but the thought had crossed my mind.

oh, man, we are praying for no viruses!!!

to put my mind at ease, i did call teresa and tell her what was

going on, she said for me to not stress to much, wettness is just

going to happen, and to watch for skin irritations and so forth. i

am getting the diaper somewhat tucked inside the cast, but like you

denise, it is so tight on the sides---right at hip bones, i can not

get it in there. so, we are just going to do the best we can. we are

using the pads also. thanks to all for your advice. thank God for

this support group!!!! will let you know how its going in a few

days, we have much to do the rest of this week and weekend. we do

start back to therapy tommorow, so we will see how that goes. I tell

you, she is doing so much better adjusting to the cast itself than i

thought she would, but i should have known, she has always been so

adaptable. all day today, i have been doing things, trying to get

her ready to go back to therapy. and she is doing well, she can

still stand(that seems to be her most comfortable position) she is

sitting better today, and so we will just go and see how it goes,

not going to push tooo hard, since it is her first time back since

casting. BTW- dr. k. is out till next week, so even if we did have

to go, and it needed taking off, he would not be able to recast for

about two weeks, according to teresa. and nobody around here sells

the tape, but they are ordering it for me and should be here by

monday, and they will keep it in stock for me from now on!! they

gave me only the narrow tape at b'ham., and i need the wide

stuff!!

Janet,

was most comfortable standing to play right after his first cast. It took

him about 2 weeks to finally be OK to sit and play and such. It will all come

eventually. Is this her 1st cat? I can't remember.

Best wishes for therapy tomorrow.

Hi Janet - that's great! I can't get the diaper to tuck on the sides

at the hip bone either, but I dont't see the diaper leaking there, so

I think it's okay. When my son was casted in the beginning, it

was very very hard as he would try to crawl and couldn't and just cry.

He could only stand, but he wasn't (and still can't) walk yet. He

could not sit very well either.

What helped us initally was for my husband to build a bench so that

had something to hold on to when he was on the floor...so he

didn't have to put his hands all the way down...and it gave him

something to hold on to to stablize. Also, with sitting, we put him

ina bean bag chair for awhile at a slant, or some people put a little

pillow in the back because the cast is so low & tight around the hips

(he always sits someone reclined).

BUT, now about 8 weeks later, he has completely adjusted and doing

everything he was doing before, including scooting his cars along the

kitchen floor and opening his favorite (allowed) cabinet. Your little

girl will also adjust, but it just takes a little time which I think

can vary with each child.

hi, yeah it is just going to take a little time but she is so strong, and she

hardly ever even acts like she has any pain, after all she has been through in

he little lifetime. we did work on sitting in that " reclined " position it does

help. and we will get back to all of her pre cast stuff. does your child have

any other condition? sage also has arthrogryposis.
