Guest guest
Hi Have just joined the group after attending Treating Autism seminar at Surrey University on Saturday and was inspired!!. Our son Robbie has just turned 7 and although we are veterans of educational intervention – we have been doing a VB programme with Rob since he was 2 and a half – we have only tried bits of biomed in a rather half hearted way over the years. We did the Sunderland test which showed possible gluten problem and attempted the GFCF diet for about 9 months when Robbie was 3 but saw little change at that time so gave up. We have also recently had a (expensive) consultation with nutritionist Kate Neill who came up with some good (but not very practical) recommendations re: supplementation and suggested a couple of tests (Sunderland and gluten intolerance). We are also on the waiting list for an appointment at the Breakspear Hospital (but understand Dr Heard has left)?? We would really like to have a proper go at biomed with Robbie as I am sure he does have gut issues – should I make an appointment with a DAN specialist and if so would you recommend that I try Dr Asha Chagarlamudi in Bromley as she is the nearest one to me? Any advice on getting started would be welcome as am feeling a bit overwhelmed..... Vickers
Guest guest
Hi Glad you enjoyed the conference. On the delegate disc is info on how to do the diet. I would suggest you try doing that first. Read Children with Starving Brains by Jacquelyn McCandless Explains testing / treatments. Apply the the Caudwell Trust for Funding. Find a DAN! practitioner Dr Chagarlamudi is nearest Breakspear is getting some more Dans trained. One been to the Dan , 2 more going. Other practitioners listed on the front page of the Treating Autism Website www.treatingautism.com Most only need to see you once and then you can do follow ups by telephone. Guest guest
Hi . It is important that the diet is really really healthy – so all organic and as home cooked as possible. I only recently found out that sourdough bread home made with wheat flour is effectively gluten free and packed full of nutrition. Goat’s and sheep’s milk are healthier than most cow’s milk and that goes for everyone I think not just those with an obvious milk intolerance. Digestive enzymes (Houston’s from MAndimart) for some people are as good as eliminating certain foods. Good quality probiotics, given away from the digestive enzymes are also a good starting point. Once you have got your child on a healthy diet you should consider whether he has a problem with constipation or impaction. Most children on the spectrum are impacted meaning that there bowel is full of hard poo (although my son wasn’t fully impacted he was fully loaded meaning a very sluggish bowel and the poo moving too slowly). To find out whether your son has these problems it is a good idea to get an x-ray done. I use Muscroft as our DAN! nutritionist. She does not prescribe so I also see Dr Heard or whoever his replacement is for prescriptions. Hope that helps. Have you looked on the treating autism website – there are lots and lots of tips on getting started there and ask loads and loads of questions on here. Good luck, SARA x -----Original Message----- From: Autism-Biomedical-Europe [mailto:Autism-Biomedical-Europe ] On Behalf Of Vickers Sent: 10 March 2008 13:19 To: Autism-Biomedical-Europe Subject: Advice needed!
