Subject: sasparilla eo ??

I had an odd request from a friend who wanted me to get him some essential oils.

One of these was a request for sasparilla--or any e.o. having root beer-like

fragrance. As far as I know there isn't such an e.o. (I know that the this plant

is the common botanic, smilax regelii, the one used in the original root beers.)

So, general question to the group is, is there an e.o. that has that particular

smell that could be used as a substitute...and from what source can I obtain a

small vial of it (say about 5 or 10 ml)? I'm based in Ontario, Canada if that

helps.

Thanks,

tw

Jon - I have a root beer blend of essential oils from EOU which is very

reasonably priced.  I bought it on an impulse because one of my daughters loves

root beer, but unfortunately she has no interest in having any soaps, lotions,

or such scented like root beer!  The bottle has been sitting here for about a

year or so - I'd be happy to send you a vial of 5 or 10 mls if you will cover

postage.  I'm not sure how that works, since I've never mailed anything to

Canada before.  (Wow, I just realized how that made me sound like a big

hillbilly - I really have been other places besides Texas, I promise!)  Send me

a PM if you are interested,

Kathy W.

I have also tinctured sassafras in 190 proof organic alcohol... Cheap, beautiful

smell and fun working with the raw materials...smells just like root beer :)

Thanks Kathy for your offer,

I don't quite know what he wants to use them for, so I've asked. After I sent

this post it occurred to me that he might have meant sassafras as I believe that

it might have also been used in original root beer formulas. (I bought some a

decade or so ago when I discovered that it was the famous smell of Snap hand

cleaner; I was then making an organicy hand scrub with aduki beans ground up

with other grains. Gave most of them away.)

Anyway, while looking this herb up I chanced upon a incongruous pot blogger

item that pointed out that sassafras oil was the main ingredient used in

making Ecstasy--ai yi yi, who knew? Clearly that oil is no longer available, and

I don't think he intends to make that with innocuous lemon and pine and

patchouli oils.

I'll get back to you once I get a reply.

J.

Thank you Christi,

Liberty is indeed a splendid site. However, have you seen their Important Notice

for sassafras that informs you that you now have to fill out a very detailed

form for the DEA, they want to know how much you are buying, and what you

intend to use it for? I fancy that our RCMP here has a similar rigmarole thanks

to all the druggies who are now using it for illicit purposes.

As I said before: Who knew??

And so for the insignificant amount of this that my friend would

probably require it is simply not worth the hassle (as I noted earlier, this

is the main ingredient-- a safrole  extract--used in manufacturing Ecstasy, so

I'll  definitely pass on that one in all instances.)

Gen. Note to everyone who has posted notes about sassafras oil: thank you all

very much, but no thanks. These oils are just for bartering with a friend who

is helping me to unscramble a corrupted USB file. I didn't realize how

complex a simple trade off could become.

 Warm Regards,

Jon

that's weird because i just ordered it a few weeks ago, and they did not have me

fill anything out, maybe because I buy a lot of different oils and they know i

am a perfumer?or maybe that is a new policy they have just instituted... to keep

it simple Jon, I am happy to send you some free of charge. since im in seattle

you would have it in just a couple days.

Yes, thanks for providing that clarity, Anya, the two are frequently confused.

Since Jon was asking for a substitute for sarsparilla, not a source I put forth

the sassafras oil idea as a substitute. The sassafras I have is leathery with a

root beer note, and it's so inexpensive it's worth a try!

Do you want a vial, Jon for your friend to try?

:)
