Hello again everyone. I joined a short while ago and posted some

questions and had so many people willing to answer my questions and

help. I really appreciate this helpful community. I don't always

have time to respond to every single message so I'm sorry if I didn't

reply to someone but I do read everything. Anyway, my daughter got a

Boston Brace a few days ago and we are really struggling to adjust to

it. I sent her x-rays to Dr. D'astous last week and have not heard

anything yet but I do know they received them and I applied to

Shriner's over the phone so I'm hoping to hear something soon.

I wanted to ask if anyone else who tried a brace before casting could

compare the mobility between the two. With the brace on my daughter

won't really do much but lay on the ground and sometimes crawl a

little. She is 4 years old and has a rare chromosome disorder. She

has hypotonia so even without the brace she can't walk but she does

crawl all the time, pull to stand, and climb onto chairs or the

couch. I'm just really worried about the brace holding her back as

far as getting her muscles stronger and wonder if the cast would be

the same or if she might have a little more movement with it on. The

brace seems very low to me but I don't know what's normal. I hope

that the longer she has it that after a while she'll get sick of

laying around and be motivated to try and move more.

Her brace also seems so constricting and uncomfortable and I wondered

if anyone else noticed a difference between the brace and cast when

it comes to comfort?

I plan to start a folder for phine in the photos section as soon

as I finish typing this message so you all can see our cutie and also

see what her brace looks like.

Thank you all for your time and support.

was in a boston brace at 10 months. He learned to crawl up

the steps the week we got it. However, in the cast, he took about 10

days to adjust. He just sort of laid there and didn't move around

much. But within two weeks, he was back to toddling around and

learned to walk and run in it.

My daughter seems more comfortable in the cast than in the brace. The brace is lower than the casts and the casts have cutouts that the braces don't so eating is easier.

My son started with the casting when he was about 13 months old. At that time, he wasn't crawling or walking. It took him a while to adjust in the cast even to things like sitting, but after a week he seemed to be doing what he was doing before with the cast on. And in a few months he did learn to crawl and walk in the cast. He just had his cast removed and is in the brace now. The brace seems much easier now compared to the cast. It's not as bulky and does not cause him to fall forward as much, so I think his balance is a little better with the brace, but as far as restricting movement, they seem fairly similar to me.
