Guest guest
Sugar Help Needed I had been buying Woodstock Organic Sugar for $1.79 lb and the last time I went to the same store for it, they had raised the price almost double. That is too pricey for me. Does anyone have any ideas for me to substitute Woodstock for something else affordable? Guest guest
So you do use sugar! Turbinado is Pure Cane Sugar, correct me if I am wrong. I really appreciate your responce, although usually with a bold statement I would expect a equally as bold recommendation. Pure cane sugar is a great choice, a bit more costly, and makes a nice KT drink. I will leave out that rat poison is basically sugar and bloodthinning agents, hence the bloody eyes. Now, can we please get rid of the rats without the poison, the wild cats around here eat them and the poison too. All in pursuit of sharing and not disparing M > > > > > > when is this listserv going to evolve, grow?, learn that there is no better- thing or ingredient period than that mother nature provides generously! > > > > > > some here claim to have been brew persons for over Ten Years and still has not yet realised that feeding all Scoby ANY form of human isolation will inevitably injure the culture at every instance & take the microbes out of SYMBIOSIS! when will we do our research, homework, humble ourselves and wake up to the fact? > > > > > > without apology, > > > > > > ~Rezz > > > > > > > > > Sent from Yahoo! Guest guest
Regular sugar will be fine. The scobies will use up most of the sugar. Sugar can be handled by the body as long as it is not taken in excess. With a healthy balanced diet and keep your sugar intake low you and your scobies will be fine. ________________________________ To: original kombucha <original_kombucha > Sent: Sunday, February 19, 2012 7:56 PM Subject: Re: Re: Sugar .......the bitter truth. Guest guest
I dont know how to get the price of sugars down, unless we all boycott high food prices. Organic pur cane sugar is great, I wish I could afford it all of the time too. Do you have any ethnic, namely Latin American Markets nearby, they seem to offer several options in the sugar world, from spun in a turbine and steamed turbinado sugar all the way down the scale to refined white sugar. At least the one here in land does. usually at lower prices too. Guest guest
I am probably very close to that market! I live in Falling Waters, WV. Is that the proper name? Or is it something else? I would like to look into them. Since they have a few different kinds, which kind of sugar do you get for your KT? I am going to call a local health food store who also has a restaurant. I had talked to her early on in my kt quest last year and she offered to fill my containers from her 5 gal buckets for $1.84 lb. I don't know if her price has gone up by now, but I will find out tomorrow. I sure hope I can find it affordable somewhere. Guest guest
I can afford (boo hoo) white sugar right now, but have used turbinado ( a molassas flavor to me) and Pure cane sugar ( very nice) too. Mr. 's studies indicate that white sugar works best in KT. Yea, I read the whole thing. Now, for humanitarism Id use pure Cane sugar, less hard labor camps. It is reallty a personal choice. Differant taste for differant folks, and we all have our own taste, thats what makes it fun. M > > I am probably very close to that market! I live in Falling Waters, WV. > > Is that the proper name? Guest guest
well since this conversation has come up before Rezz is referring to not using processed sugar at all. As I recall he has endorsed - using raisins to sweeten the tea, using very ripe banana mashing it and draining off the liquid to sweeten the tea, and I think he might have mentioned coconut nectar once too. anyway - he is not advocating any sort of sugar cane. I like to coconut nectar which I have tried. I have not tried the others yet. Guest guest
I see, I understand the logic here. Coconut sugars are good, necture. Raisans would taste good, but why not use fresh grapes and motar and pestal them to make a nice slurry, now , i dont like the idea of over ripe bananas: although the sugar would be in mass quantity. I would be concerned about the fruit putrafing in some fruits. And I would have to keep a few more scobys alive for the " just in case of mold " in using fresh fruits and juices as sweet glucose and frutose suppiers to the KT. now, what about that mango puree, could that be used in the primary fermentation, following the same logic? Agave necter, OK? Now thats sharing, if we dont share our knowledge, we all become ignorant. Now, this is a brewer of many years, Margret, speaking: Even though I sometimes tongue-in-cheek call white sugar 'demon crystals', I am not really serious. For the Kombucha culture plain sugar it is a very accessible form of nutrition - nasty side-tastes like some brown sugars have. Even using ordinary sugar as sweetener (I use honey if I need it sweet!) is o.k. - in moderation, of course. Except you come out in green spots or another allergic reaction, most food stuffs are o.k. if eaten in MODERATION. And don't forget to give God thanks for his provision! I find that especially many Americans are paranoid when it comes to food, e.g. sugar, and I do think this may bejustified in respect of carbonated drinks like coke and pepsi and similar. Diet coke I would consider pure poison. So there are some things that are better consumed with a barge pole! LOL, see me join the ranks of the paranoid! ;-) Joking aside, in Kombucha we have such a wonderful drink, an excellent tonic. To brew it is a down to earth process which can be accessible to almost everyone. No hifoluting piffle-poffle necessary. Meaning well and meaning to offend nobody, Margret:-) -- +------------------ Minstrel@... --------------------+ http://www.therpc.f9.co.uk/family/scobygrow/home.html http://bavarianminstrel.wordpress.com http://www.hebrew4christians.com/index.html creation.com True peace only comes from Jesus, the Prince of Peace.
