The 2008 Network of Autism Training and Technical Assistance Programs (NATTAP) Conference and Exposition will bring together 1,500 participants from across the country and at least 14 others, including Canada, Cameroon, Japan, Nigeria and Scotland. The NATTAP Conference will review current systems models for addressing the needs of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), promote use of best practice in research and intervention and provide methods for capacity building. The 2008 NATTAP Conference will provide a forum for the continued exchange of ideas and promising practices that provide approaches to common problems in ASD. " The State Team Forum at the 2007 NATTAP Conference provided the team from the State of Hawaii with information, guidance and examples of frameworks for incorporating professional development into a state plan to effect systems change for students with ASDs. The entire team valued participating in the State Team forum and is looking forward to the 2008 NATTAP Conference, " said Marilyn Jakeway of Special Education Department, Hawaii Department of Education. Participants will engage in opportunities for learning and growth, including: More than 230 sessions presented by experts and leaders in the field More than 80 exhibitors showcasing products, services and solutions for individuals with ASD The chance to network with other attendees who share similar stories, concerns and interests NATTAP was established in 1990 by a group of professionals working in statewide autism centers and programs. Today, there are 48 member agencies throughout the United States and Canada. Member agencies represent university-based programs, state supported programs, state department programs and privately funded programs. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the current prevalence rate of ASD is now 1 in 150 births. Educators, parents and community members continue to look for answers and support. Kristi Sakai, author of Finding Our Way: Practical Solutions for Creating a Supportive Home and Community for the Asperger Syndrome Family and mother of three children with ASD, said, " A conference becomes, for however many days, a community of support. Parents who attended could feel that their family's problems were not too significant to be overcome. What was given out in heavy measure at NATTAP was not merely information - it was hope.
