Second Annual International Autism Conference Returns to Columbus

Ohio autism center prepares to welcome 1,500 from

across the nation and around the globe

----------------------------------------------------------------------

----------

COLUMBUS, OH -- The Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence (OCALI)

and Autism Society of America (ASA) will present the premier

international autism conference in training, technical assistance and

effective strategies, Nov. 18-21, at the Greater Columbus Convention

Center in Columbus, Ohio. The 2008 Network of Autism Training and

Technical Assistance Programs (NATTAP) Conference and Exposition will

bring together 1,500 participants from across the country and at

least 14 others, including Canada, Cameroon, Japan, Nigeria and

Scotland.

The NATTAP Conference will review current systems models for

addressing the needs of individuals with autism spectrum disorders

(ASD), promote use of best practice in research and intervention and

provide methods for capacity building. The 2008 NATTAP Conference

will provide a forum for the continued exchange of ideas and

promising practices that provide approaches to common problems in ASD.

" The State Team Forum at the 2007 NATTAP Conference provided the team

from the State of Hawaii with information, guidance and examples of

frameworks for incorporating professional development into a state

plan to effect systems change for students with ASDs. The entire team

valued participating in the State Team forum and is looking forward

to the 2008 NATTAP Conference, " said Marilyn Jakeway of Special

Education Department, Hawaii Department of Education.

Participants will engage in opportunities for learning and growth,

including:

More than 230 sessions presented by experts and leaders in the field

More than 80 exhibitors showcasing products, services and solutions

for individuals with ASD

The chance to network with other attendees who share similar stories,

concerns and interests

NATTAP was established in 1990 by a group of professionals working in

statewide autism centers and programs. Today, there are 48 member

agencies throughout the United States and Canada. Member agencies

represent university-based programs, state supported programs, state

department programs and privately funded programs.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the

current prevalence rate of ASD is now 1 in 150 births. Educators,

parents and community members continue to look for answers and

support.

Kristi Sakai, author of Finding Our Way: Practical Solutions for

Creating a Supportive Home and Community for the Asperger Syndrome

Family and mother of three children with ASD, said, " A conference

becomes, for however many days, a community of support. Parents who

attended could feel that their family's problems were not too

significant to be overcome. What was given out in heavy measure at

NATTAP was not merely information - it was hope. "

The Autism Society of America (ASA) was founded in 1965 by Bernard

Rimland, Ph.D. His book, Infantile Autism: The Syndrome and Its

Implications for a Neural Theory of Behavior, was written in late

1964 and was one of the first of its kind. Over the last 40 years,

the Society has grown from a handful of parents, into the leading

source of information, research, and reference on autism. ASA is the

oldest and largest grassroots organization within the autism

community, with more than 120,000 members and supporters connected

through a working network of nearly 200 chapters nationwide.

Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence (OCALI) serves families,

educators, and professionals working with students with autism and

low-incidence disabilities, including ASD, multiple disabilities,

orthopedic impairments, other health impairments and traumatic brain

injuries. OCALI's mission is to build state- and system-wide capacity

to improve outcomes for individuals with ASD and low incidence

disabilities through leadership, training and professional

development, technical assistance, collaboration and technology.
