Vermont farmers will soon be able to sell more unpasteurized raw milk.

Right now there are limits on how much raw milk farmers can sell, because of health concerns. But a bill that's passed the House and Senate raises the limit from 25 quarts to 50 quarts a day. Supporters say it will provide extra income for farmers. A gallon of raw milk sells for about $6.

Farmers will also be able to advertise that they're selling raw milk. Supporters had wanted unlimited selling ability, but they say this is a good first step.

"The only way for a farmer to set his own price is to sell it directly to the consumer in the commodity market. The dairy farmer has no control over the price of milk. This way farmer sets his own price and he's able to make a decent living," explained Amy Schollenberger of Rural Vermont.

Although the Health Department has some concerns about raw milk, the administration says it will not block the bill from becoming law.
