Guest guest
Susie, I think that this is all a side effect of the Prednisone. It's a great drug with 3 pages of side effects! As for the elevated platelet count, that indicates an inflammatory process is and typical of people with RA. It's one of those things that goes up, along with the Sed rate and C-Reactive Protein. I've also noticed problems with healing of very minor wounds (along with a round face, growing hair where I've never had it before, fluid retention, irritability). I only gained 2 pounds but when I look at my face it looks like 40. I've been off it since June 1st but the wonderful side effects linger on. Unfortunately, the symptom relief did not last once the Prednisone was decreased to 5 mg a day and seems to have come back worse since I stopped it totally. Guess you just can't win some days! It's very difficult. All of the meds for RA can help so much once you find the right one but they all can have pretty nasty side effects. I hope the Prednisone helps and you have painfree days ahead! Guest guest
Hi, My name is . I have not posted in a log time. Too tired, depressed, in pain, etc!!! I, too. get those blue spots. I have a small rabbit and every place he puts pressure on me a spot pops up. I have struggled with anemia for ages and thought this had a factor in the bruises. Who know? in Oklahoma
Guest guest
I think it's the NSAIDS that can cause the bleeding although I'm not 100% sure. I have found that since starting them I can bleed more easily than before. My hands are the only places that it feels like my skin is getting thinner.. marrielle To look at something as though we had never seen it before requires great courage. - Henri Matisse From: Gail Sent: Sunday, June 23, 2002 9:59 PM Subject: [ ] Thin Skin...easy to bleed >The least little bump into furniture or scraping a door surface can nearly bring blood. Guest guest
Gail I have had this for the last couple of years ... and yes, it has gotten worse since my starting the Pred. (2 months now). You bruise very easily also. You could just hold my arm tight, and it will leave a terrible bruise. I have a dog, and if she barely scrapes me with a toe nail, it looks like you took a knife and made a jagged awful cut, that is very slow to heal...almost gets to the point it looks like it is infected. And leaves bad scar. Yet, it was not a bad cut! Whereas, before Pred. it would be nothing you could see in a day or two. My Platelet count is never in " normal range " , it stays high. No one has addressed this (doctors) but I always wondered if my spots had something to do with this (as it has been going on for so long, and I only reciently started the pred. Guest guest
Gail, Isn't this considered prednisone skin? I notice similar things, although I no longer take prednisone. My skin is very thin and I manage to cause harm with the dumbest things. Turns out some of the dangerous items in my office are file folders and paper!! I can do some amazing damage with paper cuts, they look like knife cuts! The veins on my hands are more prominent than I like. And it seems I always have a black and blue somewhere because I have bumped into something, sometime, somewhere. I try to ignore it. Guest guest
Gail, Yep, I am also a member of that club. I got one on my upper arm that was in such a spot that I couldn't figure out how I got it and finally realized it was from a blood pressure cuff. I think this has been a problem with prednisone for many a year as my Dad was on prednisone over 40 years ago and the doctor would comment that he had " tissue paper skin " . They never paid much attention to it and he just kinda lived with it. But I will never forget that " official " diagnosis! Guest guest
Yes, I have the same problem with fragile skin while on Prednisone. My doctor says thin skin is a side effect. Sometimes it only takes gathering up the hay to feed the horses and I am literally gouged by a hay stem! Just simple scrapes bleed and take forever to heal. I have scars from this stuff on the tops of my hands. I have also noticed easier bruising and the veins in my hands are more noticeable - kind of pushed up. Do you see anything like that? Let's face it, I am only 48 but my hands are looking old! Kathe in CA __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Kathe, Yeah, I've noticed the veins in my hands are much more prominent than they used to be. I hate the way the way they look! Guest guest
Yes, Kathe....I also have lots of scrapes and scratches on my lower arms and hands...Veins are more prominent...My hands look older than my age.....I've even injured myself in the shower, scraping against the chrome shower door handles. I get them without even knowing how or when I get them. I'm embarrassed of them when I go out in public gatherings...Dermablend* cover Creme is a good waterproof foundation to cover them up. Today, I didn't take my daily 5mg of prednisone....I wonder how long it'll be before my pain gives into taking it. I'm really scared of the long term side effects of it.....But it is a miracle drug...Used for more than RA treatment. Hope all has a better day than yesterday.
