Guest guest
this is disgusting. I'm going to write to Rory McGrath's agent and cc to Radio 2. I'll post the address if anyone else is interested. What a twat. Actually slipped up on disability the other day, he made a job about using hte disabled toilet and being in an inaccessbile office or somethng and his female co host just charged on as if someone was gesticulating very very wildly at them through a window. The NAS is right on that one - autism IS the invisible disability. But wrong in saying that we should all be accepting and celebrating. That allows these idiots (and Red magazine recently used autistic in place of " male " grrrr) to think they are doing something modern and forward looking (like people making racist jokes of late as if we're post racism) by bandying the term about willy nilly. Idiots. and Simon Mayo should know better. Or rather he's about to know better!!! > > > Rory McGrath interview with Simon Mayo last Wednesday > > > I was saddened last week to hear Rory McGrath talking about his new book about birds. > > On at least two occasions he referred to his book and said he had wanted to write a book that wasn't 'autistic' about birdwatching. > > I have a severely autistic son and the poor woman that killed her disabled autistic son then killed herself is very much in > the news at the moment. > > Obviously none of you, least of all Rory McGrath have any idea about w hat it is like > to live with autism. > > Why on earth didnt Simon Mayo stop him, did he not think it was a problem either? > > . Guest guest
I think alot of people have heard of autism but don't know what it is so they use the snippets they have heard ie super intelligent or socially awkward. I don't believe these presenters think they are being racist or insulting they just don't know. Maybe ( putting it mildly!) the NAS isn't doing a good job of publiscising what autism really is and what it means. I remember telling lots of people Charlie had autism ( a few years ago) and just getting blank stares of non comprehension - I might as well said he had a cold! This wouldn't happen with childhood cancer. Unless people have been affected they don't seem to know what it is. And if they see someone with autism who acts pretty normally then they think well thats autism it isn't that bad.
