Molly,

A good rheumatologist will listen to your symptoms and examine you in

order to try to arrive at a diagnosis. Lab results are not the only way

to tell. Sometimes they might order x-rays to see if any joint damage

has already occurred.

Many people have to wait a while before they do get a definite

diagnosis, so be persistent. If you don't think your first rheumy is

trying hard enough, you can always try to find a better one.

I'm sure a or , our moderators, will soon pipe up with some

appropriate articles for you to read.

I would strongly encourage you to be informaed about all the meds. and ask a lot

of questions. I was put on high doses of Pred. when I first got the RA verdict.

That was followed up with Plaquenil. I researched the Pres. issues as well as

the Plaquneil side effects. I decided with my RA doctor to wean off of the Pred.

I currently am doing well with the one med. although I daily take Darvocet for

pain maint.

I research alot online and then write down all my questions and concerns and

take them to my Dr. appt. I do not take a passive stand in my fight of this RA.

I figure that this is my body, I listen to the pain and aches and inform my

doctor. He makes his decisions and then we discuss them to find what I am

confortable with.

I think too many people take a Dr. as the know all of things. I have learned

that there are more options out there, some doctors do not take the time to

listen. If you are not happy with one Dr. I encourage you to keep searching

until you find one that you can work together as a team with.

In a nut shell, the better informed you are the better. Good luck!

Does anyone have seronegative RA?

My pcp has recently diagnosed me with this. He said the xray and

clinicial presentation definitely look like RA to him but my lab work

is all normal. (he also took it 4 days following 2 rounds of steroids)

He is referring me to a rheumatologist. Don't have that appointment

yet. I will be honest, I am kind of scared of the side effects of the

rheumatoid meds but also understand their benefits far out weigh the

side effects. I guess I am just going thru a lot of emotional changes

with this. Any good suggestions from anyone?

Sue,

There are three criteria:

-have RA

-low white blood count

-enlarged spleen

Another thing with Felty's is increased nodules.

I agree with everyone. I was diagnosed with seronegaitve RA in April

2006. And early treatment is important. I had three positive ANA's

six yrs ago; and the Rheumy I saw then just thought I was a " crazy

new mommy with postpartum " . My new Rheumy cant figure out why my

ANA's are negs now?? But puts if off on my prednisone. So now we are

in a holding pattern and testing for Lupus....which is impossible. So

keep all in check. Make sure you have an eye exam also. People forget

to have their eyes done; inflammation causes problems everywhere.

Good Luck with everything.
