Patient¹s Perspective on Alternative Therapies

No matter the stand a physician takes on alternative therapies, he or she

should be ready and willing to talk to their patients about alternative

therapies. There is a growing population using non-traditional therapies to

treat their conditions and symptoms. It is the role of the physician to

teach the patient in order to allow the patient to make informed decisions

about their health care. The most common reason why patients seek

alternative therapy is for muscular complaints.

Before talking to a patient about the therapies and treatments that are

available, the physician should understand what causes a patient to seek

this type of therapy. Common motives include the desire to avoid side

effects of conventional therapy, a belief that the therapies are effective

in treating their ailments. The patient feels a sense of control, as well as

a sense of being included in their medical care. Approaching questions about

alternative therapy begins with the identification of the principle symptom.

This helps determine if the therapy in question is appropriate and help to

predict if it will be effective. Regular follow-up is mandatory in order to

ensure the patients health and safety.

The growing use of alternative therapies in the United States is a trend

that cannot be ignored. The physician can guide the patient in the right

direction regarding treatment and therapy. It is important to be open with

the physician in order to express their needs and wishes. Although

discussions may not end in agreement, they are chances for shared decision

making and ³relationship centered² care.
