Guest guest
Hello all. My name is and I live in Spring, 30 miles north of Houston. I have not been active in the group for some time due to poor health. I was dxd with SD back in Oct '98. It is very well controlled with Kineret which has also improved my severe Uveitis I had for several years. Both eyes are now clear. I have recently been diagnosed with Hepatitis A, drug-induced from that fabulous MTX -- HA!. I was on MTX from 10/98 until about 9 mths ago. Has anyone else been dxd with Hep A bcuz of MTX? What resolution did you and your doc come up with? Then, I was tested for Leukemia/Lymphoma when my spleen showed to be grossly enlarged. Luckily, it is enlarged because of SD, No Cancer!. Has anyone had enlargement with their spleen because of SD? Are you taking something or changed to a new medication that has reduced the swelling? And for the ladies: I have severe anemia and each year, I must go for blood transfusions and iron transfusions. The time period between the transfusions is getting shorter and shorter. I have 5 fibroid tumors which seems to assist in the anemia, along with SD. My Rheumy and OBGYN are suggesting a hysterectomy. I haven't spoke with my Hematologist about this. I wanted to get y'all's thoughts. I'm so afraid of early menopause and more weight gain after the surgery. Thank you so much for any thoughts or input. Guest guest
dear friend!!!! Oh how I think of and miss you. I'm sorry you have been gone due to illness. I did have the enlarged spleen when first diagnosed but I guess it went down on it's own because I don't know of any particular treatment they did for it. I also had the severe anemia into the first few years and had the transfusions as well but other than additional iron with the extra vitamin? can't remember which one and the transfusions in the couple of hospital stays, I guess that cleared up as well. I had to have an ovary removed first and then a total hystarectomy in 95 quite a few years later so don't believe that was Still's related at all. It did help me feel so much better though and I haven't regretted it a day since. My opinion for myself only. I had so many symptoms for years before it was really a blessig for me. Anyway, I would love to welcome you home and say I hope you check in now and again or at least email me. I have missed you and has very fond memories of our Vegas medication hunt and coming up money, lol. Many smiles. ----- Original Message ----- From: in Houston My name is I have recently been diagnosed with Hepatitis A, drug-induced from that fabulous MTX Then, I was tested for Leukemia/Lymphoma when my spleen showed to be grossly enlarged. Guest guest
Hey ! Long time no talk! ;-) I hope you are doing okay other than all these wacky problems. I can't really offer much on what you asked. I believe Nissa, or someone up in Seattle, has spleen issues, you might want to search the message archives. houston
Guest guest
Hi Diane. Because MTX is so toxic, they recommend getting blood work every month to keep an eye on the liver. I was on it for about 9 years. Just remember to always get your blood checked and ask your doc about Folic Acid. That helps with the side effects of MTX. Guest guest
Hi ,    I get the blood work but it has been about  2.5  months in between tests. I am on lipitor and it seems you are 'supposed' to get your blood tested for that but the HMO Dr.s that I have to go to says once a year is fine...and then I  have to remind them!  I take 1mg. of Folic Acid every day.  and I take 2 vitamin D's + Calcium...plus alot of other pills...lol  I call Sundays  ''17 Sunday'' because that is how many pills I take that day...(high blood pressure...cholesterol..ahhh it is great growing old).  Since I take 15mg. of metho.. a week, do you think it is that toxic? Guest guest
Hi Diane Something I learned about calcium pills is that your body cannot absorb more than 600mg at a given time. I was taking 1000mg, two pills, in the morning. I developed Osteoporosis because of this. Be sure to take one calcium in the am and one in the pm. 15mg of MTX is what I was on. I took it in pill form until it would make me sick. I then took it in shots and it was so much easier on my tummy. But still hard on the liver. I hope you have a great weekend. Guest guest
Hi ,   My Dr. recommended two tablets 600mg each (total of 1200 mg. of calcium ) for me a day and600iu of vitamin D.  I found these vitamins at Jewel (local grocery store here) that have no presevative..lactose free no gluten and no artificial flavor...sooooooo  maybe that will help. I take them every day...usually The Metho makes me nauseas for 2-3 days now  and my hair is thinning out but  oh well..I have not had a bad flare up ...knock on wood...since OCT./NOV.  so we shall see... I go back to the Dr. Feb 6th and told work I wont come back till I feel 100%....too much stress in a trauma one hospital midnight shift!! You have a nice weekend How far away are you from Forney Texas?  I have a brother and his family who live there... Diane..42 Re: Happy 2008 (I have 'stuff', can you help?) Guest guest
Folks, I spent a number of years working in immunology with emphasis in the area of viral hepatitis testing. I had given several presentations to professional organizations on the topic. Below is a little info on different forms of " Hepatitis " , which simply means " inflammation of the liver " . Hepatitis A is not caused by MTX. That would be " drug induced hepatitis. However, any other Hepatitis can be worse becuase of the drugs we are on. For detailed information on forms of Hepatitis, see the end of this disertation. Hepatitis A is a viral disease and would not be caused by MTX or any drug. It is transmitted by the " fecal-oral " route. ( bad hand washing by infected food handlers, including farm workers ) However, if you have liver damage or a " stressed " liver due to the drugs you/we are on and happen to get hit with a viral hepatitis, the effect to your liver could be multiplied. In actuallity, in large urban populations, studies have shown that the the number of adults over 30 who have had Hep A is up to 70% or more. The majority of them, in retrospective studies, experienced none or gastrointestinal viral like symptoms. Worse is usually increased temp, severe stomach and intestinal discomfort, liver pain and jaundice. Really, really severe cases have resulted in death, I have seen one case of documented Hep A being transmitted by blood transfusion. I had Hep A back in 1983. I can tell exactly when because in the lab I worked at we had a Viral Hepatitis panel run every 6 months. Once I was neg and the next I was Pos. In between I had the worse " GI " attack I ever had. Vomiting for several days etc. Never got noticible jaundice. Viral Hepatitis - Hepatitis A - Viral, rarely chronic. Most case are asymptomatic. Tansmitted by transfusion only under very extremely rare (few documented) situations. Hepatitis B - Viral, can become chronic. Transmitted by transfusion, dirty needles, sex. Severe cases can be fetal. Chronic cases can lead to Liver cancer. Hepatitis C - Viral, frequently goes to chronic condition. Very bad on liver. Transmitted by transfusion, dirty needles. Very few documented cased as transmitted by sex (found in some obscure Italian journal). Hepatitis D- Viral, can become chronic. Interesting fact is that you must have Hep B or be a Hep B carrier to come down with Hep D. The D viruses " borrows " parts manufactured by the Hep B virus to replicate itself. Hepatitis E - Viral. Little is known, the last I checked. Chemical Hepatitis - Drug or Chemical induced inflammation of the liver. Chemicals such as organic solvents are big culprits. Drugs - most drugs are metabolized (broken down) in the liver so many can do some damage. This would be the one caused by MTX. Guest guest
Hi Uncle Fuzzy. Thanks for the clearification. Somewhere I got A in my head but I remember hearing drug-induced hepatitis. The memory just isn't what it once was. I need to buy a recorder to take with me to doctor offices so I can remember everything said. Thanks again. Guest guest
I have to hide mine too. Not because it worries anyone, but because they jsut think I'm a pill popper. Guest guest
I suppose I don't worry about much...I have pill bottles by the dozen throughout my house. The only ones " hidden " are the pain meds, and they are under lock & key after " someone close " decided he could have fun with them & make a few bucks!!!! The only problem with that is if I don't need something for a long time (as in the summer) it usually takes me awhile to re3member where in the hell they are. Other than that, my wife takes care of them as I kept screwing them up...somehow. Hell, I have a cabinet filled with meds that were tried, filled and discontinued within a short while. There has to be 60 different scripts here in my name although I'\m only really on 13/day plus pain meds. I hate the F****** things!!!!! > > I have to hide mine too. Guest guest
No one worries about me being a 'pill popper', they just hate seeing me on so much medicine. I guess I can understand it.. Seeing your child sick, regardless of age, etc... Is hard. I wish it didn't have to be so hard for them. -- Re: Happy 2008 (I have 'stuff', can you help?) I have to hide mine too.
