Guest guest
Hello all I'm new to the group and KT just started drinking KT about 2 weeks ago. Miracles have already begun... the best one my horrible constipation seems to have been cured! I'm also sleeping through the night again and have been having to take very heavy doses of different medications to do so. Those medications enabled me to get at least 6 hours of sleep a night but since doing KT I've been sleeping 8-10 hours so am starting to taper off the sleep meds! YAYYYY!!! Now for the real question...Daahhtahdah... LOL I started trying to brew my own KT last Tuesday. I have some spots on my Skoby and I have researched a lot online. I think they are the Yeast brown spots but would really like someone with more experience to look at them and give me feedback. I don't want to drink something I'm not sure of! They are NOT fuzzy at all and did have stringy stuff hanging from them but now that stuff is gone. The brown spots are pretty dark though which is where my concern lies. I'm going to post the photos to the group and would really appreciate feedback! I have absolutely fallen in love with GT's Raw Kombucha! Guest guest
Hi Myree, As far as I can tell there is no mold on your SCOBY however I could really only see the light photos not the dark ones so it is up to you to decide what you see. Mold can be any color but it is also fuzzy and appears in spots on the top of the SCOBY. There are some photos of mold on SCOBY in the list photo section. Ir looks just like mold on bread or cheese or fruit. Guest guest
You really can't mistake mold for something else. It is something that forms on top of the scoby and it is dry, just like any other mold on food. Scobys form all kinds of spots and bubbles and whitish colors and brown spots. I would say if they are wet, they are fine. The mold I experienced was on top and was dry. Tho I did not see it start to form. It was on my Dad's untouched, unloved 6 month old KT. But it was definitely as I said. Guest guest
Hi Myree, You have a completely normal young scoby. They look pretty weird! I have never had mold form on my scobies. The acidic environment just doesn't allow mold to form under normal conditions. Also, the yeast and bacteria in the scoby defend their territory. You are far more likely to have ants show up, attracted by the sweet tea, so keep a coffee filter rubber-banded around the top of your brewing jar. I am so glad that you have seen health improvements so quickly. Happy brewing! ---Olivia > > > > > > Hello all I'm new to the group and KT just started drinking KT about 2 > > > weeks ago. Guest guest
Thanks Olivia yes I bought coffee filters from the food Co-op and just took it off for the pics. I got a new filter to recover it.
