Guest guest
I can't remember if this has been asked before, but can anyone explain in a " simple to understand way " , what a " Mitochondrial Disorder " is? Miles
Guest guest
, I'm not sure if this will help, but the mitochondria supply energy to all of our cells. So, if somehow energy production is impaired, you could have problems in ANY system in your body. One person's mitochondrial disorder might then manifest as something different than another person's. Lots of our kids have low energy. This might be a result of mito disorder. Lots of our kids have chronic constipation. This also might be a result of mito disorder. Cognitive difficulties, fatty acid oxidation problems. Many different things because the mitochondria are implicated in everything. The disorder for our children is likely a result of some sort of environmental assault. I also believe it can be exacerbated by the modern diet we eat, even prior to conception. I know there's a lot of talk about the mito disorders right now because of the Poling case, which is great, but many veteran parents have been giving the so-called mito cocktail for a long time. Guest guest
---, I found this site which explains about mito disorders, symptoms and mito cocktail treatments. http://www.clevelandclinic.org/health/health-info/docs/1600/1678.asp? index=6957 Glynis In Autism-Biomedical-Europe , " milesdj8 " wrote: > > I can't remember if this has been asked before, but can anyone explain > in a " simple to understand way " , what a " Mitochondrial Disorder " is? > > Miles >
Guest guest
I rememeber someone saying there is no test for mitochondria disorder but if this is the case how was it proved in Hannah's case? Guest guest
--- Hi Peta, I think if it is warranted a muscle biopsy can be performed. I copied this from the site I mentioned earlier about mito disorders, which explains the tests which may be carried out to diagnose mito conditions. Glynis x Mitochondrial disease is diagnosed by: Evaluating the patient's family history Performing a complete physical examination Performing a neurological examination Performing a metabolic examination that includes blood, urine, and optional cerebral spinal fluid tests Performing other tests, depending on the patient's specific condition and needs. These tests might include: -- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or scan (MRS) if neurological symptoms are present -- Retinal exam or electroretinogram if vision symptoms are present -- Electrocardiogram (EKG) or echocardiogram if heart disease symptoms are present -- Audiogram or BAEP if hearing symptoms are present -- Blood test to detect thyroid dysfunction if thyroid problems are present -- Blood test to perform genetic DNA testing More invasive tests, such as a skin or muscle biopsy, might be performed as needed and recommended by your doctor.
