Hello Everybody,

Few days ago I wrote a post here mentioning that so far I did not have any problem with my daughter's skin in relation to her cast; if ever there is redness which is usually by the armpit I would just apply Calendula cream and overnight it "heals". I was thankful that her skin is not that "fragile" or sensitive. Looks like I was proven wrong because just two nigths ago she complained that the tape is "touching" her tummy and it hurts. I was able to remove or detached the sticking part of the hytape from her tummy. I put a soft cloth which acted like a padding in between. Overnight (again) the redness disappeared with Calendula cream. She did not complain of anything the next day (which was yesterday-Sept. 19 -her birthday too). By night time that is when I noticed the problem. While cleaning her up I noticed some red area on her back at the level of the hip bone prominence by then she doesn't want me to

touch it because she said it hurts. I was able to talk to the doc this morning who told me that maybe the padding worn out already so he told me to add more padding. By the way, ...blame it on me... I never realized that her cast got soak with urine which leaked from her diaper that morning and the way the cast was taped it did not dry up the way it used to.

First question is will moleskin work as a padding? Where else can I get it aside from ISOP fast? Any other advise that you can give me? I did not put anything there anymore aside from the soft cloth which now is working like a padding. I am afraid that this will cause a skin break down.

I also doubt it whether it is really in the bone prominence bec if she bends the red area can be seen. But it is more at the back going to the sides. Another problem is since she's afraid that it will hurt her she does not cooperate like positioning so that I can see the affected area.

Thanks for your advices or inputs.

If you can pull her shirt out (if she wears a shirt underneat) you'll need to wash it thoroughly by having her sit by the sink and you use some mild detergent or her baby soap and then rinse by pulling it out as possible and drying it on cool w/a blowdryer. Before you do this, I take a clean washcloth and some soap and try to wipe the cast off, just to remove any surface odors, don't soak it w/water, just wipe it.

Evan had this many times w hen his diaper would leak and then he would often get some blisters which were the beginning stages of the skin breaking down..so we used Duoderm to protect the skin from the wetness in the cast once we applied some cream (yours seems to work well) for several days.

Thanks a lot , she does not have a t-shirt though our hospital or does not use the t-shirt like some do. So it is cast then skin but the cast is well padded. I will try wipe off the odor just like you said; I said I will try bec now she does not want to cooperater bec she said it hurts and with tears in her eyes she confesses that she is scared. Thus i know that there is a problem bec she is always cooperates in anyway she can when it regards to her cast. Thanks also for mentioning for mentioning duoderm bec. actually that is what we use for 1st stage pressure ulcer in the hospital. I was just kind of hesistant to realize and accept that what she has is already a 1st stage.

Again thank you.

I"m sure you already know this, but our docs said that Evan's sore needed to be completely cleaned and dry prior to putting on the duoderm. We'd leave the duoderm on for 24-48 hours and reapply. It worked well b/c it was a barrier adn it added some cusion as well.

Poor little girl...Evan was the same way, very cooperative, until something was scarry or wrong.

Good luck, you're in my prayers.

and Evan

Hi Ethelyn,

You can buy moleskin in bulk at a medical supply store or a small package at a pharmacy... CVS, Eckerd's, and Rite Aid all carry moleskin... If you can't find it, ask the pharmacist and they will help you locate it..... Aquaphor also worked best on Noelle when she had red areas.... Hope this helps and she feels better soon! Steph

Thank you too and esp. for the prayers and sure enough we got the answer that we wanted. I was at work when I posted my problem and when I got home this morning she was excited to tell me that it feels better. although she was still kind of afraid to show it to me lest i would "touch" it again bec it hurts when I touch it. tonight is a better one. For now I don't think I need the duoderm but I will always keep that in mind. that is one ironic thing in medicine when it comes to family some healthcare providers like me do not know what to do!!!???!!!

Yes....It works as a padding, but just make sure the adhesive doesn't stick to the skin or you'll get more redness.....The popping noise is still there, but her pediatrician gave her a thorough check-up and soesn't think it's her hip.... He believes it's the cast. I'll know a lot more in two weeks.... It seems to be dragging by this time!!!!!! Steph
