Guest guest
Amen to the police training. As our 14 yo PDD/NOS daughter has gotten bigger and stronger, my wife has had to call local law enforement a couple of times to help with her aggression. I travel occasionally so if I am not there or my son is not home, my wife could be injured by my daughter. We live west of Houston and the Constable's office has responded very well and we have been pleased that they are not totally clueless in dealing with ASD kids. More training, however would be welcome. > > That is great Michlle. Did Dennis Debault do the training in Houston? I hope he gets to see this also. It is interesting that officers reported back they had several encounters in a short period of time, but I am wondering what the reason was. Were they called to the stores, or sites, or did they just happen to see these people, and were more or less observing rather than intervening? > > C. > >
Guest guest
Dennis did do a one day training for a wide variety-sherriff, school, county-- of officers in March, but I did the majority of the trainings twice a month for the year for the CIT refresher course. Mark liked my training so much, he is including it for his 2 day. Thanks to the Texas Young Autism Project for providing an occasional cover when I had a trip to Austin to testify or other commitment. Mark was a GREAT guy to work with and a wonderful advocate for families. I'm actually also looking at bringing the " Take Me Home " project to Houston. .. . .so many projects, so little time. All I have to do is find a way to get someone to pay me! (The CIT department did give me a nice plaque though). I think the incidents just happened (one officer saw a non-verbal boy in a grocery store parking lot who had wandered away from his home). There may also be an increase in incidents because a CIT officer is now riding together with an MHMRA staffer in the mobile crisis unit in Houston. S. Guest guest
I will definately testify that Ofcr Donohoe is a great person and is very helpful and willing to get 'Take Me Home Program' to whomever needs it...he is doing it for our ofcrs here in Del Rio ...i think if we all get together & get our agencies to request a mandatory training on Autism, they will listen....our sheriff and now our Pd have already requested this to TCLOSE...(there is strength in #'s) > > > > Dennis did do a one day training for a wide variety-sherriff, school, > county-- of officers in March, but I did the majority of the trainings > twice a month for the year for the CIT refresher course. Especially when one is returning from Del Rio to SA have to stop at the check-point. It is a shame what some of us still have to go through this within the USA due to all the trafficking. I guess from there other border town will spread the word. I understand they are doing their job based on what I have confronted, nothing ugly but at least for them to understand when a person like a parent mentions the word autism.
