Guest guest
We've had a very positive experience. Ian started at 43 degrees and is now three degrees. He's been out of his casts & brace for 6 months now and is doing well. The cons are that bathing is a pain and you have to stay away from water & sand. Some people have skin issues, but we were lucky to have not had to deal with it. You can have skin issues with a brace too. Personally, I found the brace to be way more of a pain than the cast. It was much hotter and a lot more uncomfortable for Ian. It was very difficult to take off and remove...not a one person job. I always worried that I was not putting it back on exactly right and with a cast you don't have to worry about that. Guest guest
Hi , I also have twin girls~ Amelia and Adelaide. Addy was diagnosed at 9 months with Infantile Scoliosis and a 42 degree curve. Her Dr. placed her in a brace and she rapidly progressed to over 75 degrees. We began casting at 22 months and she is currently in her 11th cast. Unfortunately with Addy, we wasted precious growing time in a brace that was not working... and we began casting a bit too late. We are aware that she will need surgery some day~ but we have been able to " buy " two years and possibly a few more before facing that. I wish you and your family all the best-I hope that you will consider casting while she is still young enough. We did not know about it when Addy was first diagnosed, or we would possibly have a different situation right now. BTW- her twin is fine. Amy Mom to : Isabella 7 and Amelia & Adelaide 3.5 wrote: Hi. We are taking our twins to the Ortho. today. One of the, , has a 30 degree curve and the other, Olivia, is being X-rayed to see if she has scoliosis. They are 15 months. Our Ortho. is probably going to recommend a brace. With the help of this group's members, we've been made aware of the Mehta method casting and really are leaning toward meeting with Dr. Kishan of Loma Med. Ctr. in CA. to have him look at and possibly cast her (Mehta). Hubby and I want to know the following: If anyone has had a less-than-positive experience with the Mehta casting and If anyone has had the experience that after the casting time period, the child's curve gets worse or returns to it's original degree of curvature. We don't want to invest a lot of time and money into casting if 's curve will come back 2 years after the casts come off. We also want to be sure that we are investing the time efficiently to get 's curve under control or improved. I'm sure as parents of little ones, you all know what I mean. We have talked to several people, now who have had terrific experiences, but now we want to know what, if any, " cons " there are! Thanks so much. You all have helped us so much in one week. I'm glad we found your group. [] Karns Mom to (30 degrees) and Olivia
Guest guest
Thanks for the response, Amy (and everyone else)! It really helps us make a very vital decision and we really appreciate the help and support. and Chuck Karns (30 degrees) and Olivia > Hi. We are taking our twins to the Ortho. today. Guest guest
To the group: Does the ISOP website have links to the Mehta & /D'Astous' published articles? I can't find them. - Make sure that you read this article: " Growth as a corrective force in the early treatment of progressive infantile scoliosis. " This article reports outcomes of casting from a longitudinal study. It was published in a prestigious medical journal. http://www.scoliosiskidsaustralia.com/scoliosis_information.php There are also more articles on the ISOP website: http://www.infantilescoliosis.org/news.htm There's another article published by , but I can't find it online. Also, did you call ISOP and order the packet which includes the informational DVD? 1- This helped me in the beginning. Guest guest
Kelley I would not waste the precious time with bracing first. If she progresses and you loose that time it will be harder to get the correction later. If you have to do surgery at an early age before they stop growing it can cut the life expectancy in half in some cases. I don't want to scare you but I have seen with my own eyes the problems it can cause and I have seen the casting work. I live in Colorado close to and Olivia. I have seen Olivia and that girl should not have to suffer with all the surgies she has just because doctors 7yrs ago didn't know what Infanile Scoliosis was. My son was 19months old when he started casting he had a curve over 40degrees and had three casts. He is now in a brace with a 4.2degree curve. It works and if your daughter has a relentless curve that refuses to take the correction the casting will buy here valuable growing time so that surgery could hopefully be put off till she finishes growing.
