The whole education system's way of dealing with abusive kids is so

messed up. My 15 year old cousin sexually assaulted a classmate and the

school never told his foster parents - they had to hear it from the

police when the girl pressed charges.

Such lenience towards unacceptable behavior is not only dangerous for

anyone in contact with these kids, but also makes it much less likely

that they'll get better. Actually, the best treatment for this seems to

be the so-called 'reality therapy' - they're supposed to bluntly

challenge the person on their messed-up beliefs and behavior while

making it clear that they still care about them, and this breaks the

pattern of abuse and enabling that typically causes such behavior and

perpetuates it.

This article is very disturbing, I can see this happening to my 12 yr old high

functioning daughter. I have had to repeatedly complaing to her school about

teachers leaving the classroom unsupervised. She is regular ed and in a very

small community school, so teachers feel more comfortable leaving the students

but it is not good practice. I got my daughters Dr. to write a letter to the

school telling them she is not to be unsupervised at any time. Fortunately, my

husband is also a teacher at this school, so he can supervise my daughter

closely (this was why we decided for her to go to his small school with about

200 students, vs. my school which has over 900 students).
