Yes Susie. Steroids are the drugs we love to hate. We love the pain

relief they bring,

But hate the long term side effects.

Yes, Susie, steroids can do wonders, can't they? I

take Prednisone only if I really, really have to

because of severe pain with a flare - I have only done

this on three or four occasions in the past three

years - because of the darn side effects you mention.

With the first dose, the next day I feel so much

better, but have trouble sleeping, get very serious

and moody, and eat everything that does not eat me

first. I try to limit the use of Pred to two weeks -

so far that has worked - I take 20 mg. daily the first

week and then 10 mg. daily the second week - that

usually gets me through fine. Glad you're feeling

better!

I was on a low dose (7mg) of prednisone for 3 months and my quality of life was

so much better. I always slept lightly and was moody, but pain was not an issue

any more, and the freedom from it was heaven. I'm going to ask my rhuemy if I

can do what you do Kathe and see if I can taper on and off. I can get by OK

most times but there are periods when I'll gladly take the bad with the good.

Hey pain will make you pretty irritable and sleepless too! more so than a little

prednisone : )

Oh yeah...

I felt great 4 hours after taking that first dose of prednisone. Pain? What

pain?

Then, as warned, several months into taking the prednisone, side effects

started becoming more and more apparent. The insomnia was corrected by

taking it in the am. The weight gain was inevitable as I was always hungry

and the little switch that tells you to quit eating cause you're full broke.

It wasn't till the killer headaches started that I knew I didn't want to

take prednisone anymore.

The mtx works pretty good although I have good days and bad days. Nothing

that approximates that wonderful feeling of well being those first few days

of taking prednisone.

Kathe,

What should I expect when I'm off Prednisone? Will the pain,

stiffness and swelling come right back? I've put a call in to the

doctor and haven't heard back from him. But I'm experiencing pain in

my lower groin area, quite a bit. I don't know wheather it's my hips

starting to hurt again or what. I'm also more and more sleepy. Is

this typical?

Hi Susie! I've been taking Prednisone for 7 weeks now. Felt great right away

but I was so agitated for the first 3 weeks. It has subsided. I haven't had

any weight gain, but the MTX is causing loss of appetite, at least I think

that's what is causing it. When I started taking Prednisone, only 5mg a day, I

felt great the second day. But the cycle of flares I was having, every 2 weeks,

was still there. My doctor said to double my pred. for a day or two, and that

did the trick. I haven't had to increase it since starting Methotrexate 4 weeks

ago. I take my MTX on Friday night, and by Thursday, my pain is starting to

come back. Not too bad, but there. Friday I forgot my prednisone, and the pain

was much worse. I know the MTX isn't quite doing it all yet, and I really don't

know what to expect. I know it's too soon to taper the Prednisone. I have

found the last couple of weeks that I have had an increase of my headaches.

Part is due to feeling better, and doing more and putting more strain on my neck

and upper back which has been the problem with my headaches in the past. I'll

definitely bring it up to my doctor on Monday.

Glad your feeling better!

Hi Everyone - I haven't posted for a week or two because the new meds

(steriods) the doc has me on are terrific! Except for my mood,

hunger and insomnia, I'm pain free. Is it possible that this could

happen like this? I'm not completely pain free, but next best thing

to it.

I wondered if anyone else here had the same reactions?

Susie,

Pain in the groin area is supposed to be an indicator of true hip pain.

Susie,

Yes, sorry to say that the pain etc will come back. That's why prednisone

is really a temporary fix for most. Finding the right medication and in my

case surgery is more longterm. The fatigue is also normal. When I am not

on the right meds, I can sleep 10-12 hours at night and then another 3

during the day but with my enbrel and lodine that doesn't happen.

Hi Susie:

When I last did the taper of Pred, I tried to taper

down from 20 to 10 too soon (only 4 days on the 20 and

then down) and the pain came right back, so I kept on

the 20 for another 3 days and then tapered down the

following week. The pain does come back but not as

bad as when I needed to start the Pred - it just

gradually creeps back up on you. But the level of it

is tolerable - gets better, gets worse, but remains

tolerable. The stiffness and swelling in my hands and

fingers never really goes away - what causes me to

turn to Prednisone is elbow pain, so bad that I cannot

even dry myself off after a shower or lift anything

without sharp elbow pain. That pain is taken care of

with the Pred - still have some but, like I said, at a

tolerable level. As far as sleeping, Pred usually

makes my sleep difficult, it's the RA that makes me

tired and sleepy - usually more so after taking Metho

on Friday night - the weekend I just want to sleep.

Hope this helps you some -
