HI all,

So I have a sitaution and i am note sure of the best route to take. i

hope someone has a good idea about what to do.

My daugther has an appointment (consultation only-the doctor has not

yet seen her xrays) at SLC on Wednesday 11/26 - the day before

Thanksgiving. We are traveling from California to Utah on Tuesday and

returning Wednesday evening - SUCH an undesireable time to travel right.

so here is my question/ two choices:

1 - travel to the appointment for the consultation ONLY knowing we will

more than likely have to return in a month or so to start casting.

2 - Postpone the appointment until a time where we can be there for the

Wed-Fri duration so that if the doctor decides she is a candidate for

casting we can do it then and there. In the mean time I will be

sending all xrays for the doctor to review to see if he can determine

if she is a candidate for casting from just looking at the xrays.

Violet is only 5 months old so the care coordinator is telling me she

is probably too little to cast just yet anyway.

*RVAD - 23, COBB - 31

*her last xray was mid september

*next xray is not until December

*my clueless doctors in California think she will be a candidate for

casting.

*we pay for travel

i feel like we should hold off until the next set of xrays and we

should go at a time where she could stay to be cast if that what the

recommendation is.

bottom line is how important do you all think it is to go just for an

inperson consutation?

any thoughts are appreciated?

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Janet

Just FYI, my son, Evan was casted when he was only 4.5 months old, so Violet is not too young to be casted.

I'd ask the care coordinator IF there is any way that she could be casted the next day or w/in a few days.

I, personally, would keep the appointment.

Good luck and feel free to email me w/any questions.

and Evan

Hi Janet,I would call the care coordinator and ask these same questions, I believe she will give you a straight answer and the benefits of travel or simply sending some xrays..With that said, I would travel to SLC so that the surgeon can evaluate your daughter in person, plus they most likely will do an xray there to see if she is progressing. They also did a 'traction' xray on our daughter to see how flexible her spine was.Getting an appointment for casting in SLC can take weeks, we were lucky and there was a cancellation, but at our initial acceptance we were having to wait 7 weeks for a casting appointment. The surgeon will be able to evaluate your daughter and then they can schedule a casting date. I would just be worried that there might be several weeks of delay if you wait until the December xrays can be sent and your daughter wouldn't be

able to be casted for another month. But the stress of traveling with an infant and the holiday time is another factor. You will make the right decision, go with what your gut tells you to do.LizSubject: timing questionTo: infantile_scoliosis Date: Thursday, October 30, 2008, 4:57 PM

Hi Janet,

Where in Cali are you? We are casting the week of Thanksgiving, so

we're driving from Lake Elsinore, CA to Utah on 23rd, casting 24th and

driving home 25th. Are you driving or flying?

Because it's so far, I would try to send the doc as much info as

possible (X-rays, MRIs, etc.) and then get the opinion of the medical

coordiator at SLC for the doc to see what she thinks you could do.

They may or may not be able to accommodate a tentative cast date, but

she is the one who would know.

Best,

Definitely

make sure SLC receives films and all pertinent info, prior to the initial

appt. They may decide just by seeing the films that she needs an edf

jacket and will schedule her appt. as soon as they can. That being said, x-rays

don’t reveal everything and they will not get the best view without

actually seeing your babe. As you can imagine, the initial appt. is very

important in determining progression, curve type(s), any syndromes, RVAD &

Cobb, etc, etc…….. The doc in SLC is very thorough and

prefers to examine/treat the child, not just the x-ray (like so many others….).

They can better assess your babies situation by seeing/touching the child. If

you can swing it, I would try and make the appt.
