Hypothetical question: You can move anywhere within HISD to get a

good program for your 2nd grader. Mostly non-verbal (will speak with

prompting, does a lot of babbling and has echolalia), who reads above

grade, does near grade level math, but has moderate stimming (hands

flapping) and behavioral issues. Child has done well in the past in a

mainstream public kindergarten (with aide) as well as in private

intensive ABA program.

What school would you choose? I realize placement is decided in an

ARD, is not based on where you live etc. Please don't lecture me on

the reality of the process - this is a hypothetical. Where in HISD

would you choose, if you COULD choose?

From my experience HISD needs a lot, alot to learn and accomplish for the

special education. If I have the chance to move, I move to the northeast states.

HISD has improved dramatically since my boy was a student there. We went through

hell at first trying to find a school with a decent special ed program with less

kids per classroom. At Barbara Bush Elementary they tied my son to a chair for

several hours. When he got home, he had belt strap bruises on this arms and

legs. My quiet passive aggressive husband that never says anything lost his cool

and called the Principal and told her that if she and the staff were not at our

home within the next 15 minutes, he was going to call the local press, CPS,

Marvin Sindler and the police. They made it in 10 minutes.

Our son was transferred lickity split to Fiest Elementary where they had a

trained group of teachers and experienced Special Ed program. What a difference

it made for my son and for us. The teachers had good training and had

implemented PECS and kept abreast the latest programs and assisted technologies.

Then the Principal left and the new one was not as sympathetic to Special

Education and that is when we picked up and moved to the Northwest side to the

Cypress Fairbanks School District. My son attends Carlton Center which is a

school for CFISD Special Ed students that need to have less students per

classroom and one-on-one attention by teachers. We don't have any complaints. I

could go on and on so I better stop now.....

One thing you should never forget, you are your childs only true advocate. At

the ARDS OPEN YOUR MOUTH AND ASK AND DEMAND. The squeaky wheel gets the

attention!

Oh my gracious!  I am SO SORRY that happened to you son --- and KUDOS to your

husband!

I live right around the corner from Carlton Center and know a few students there

-- I met the director recently...

Can you share more about the programs and staff there?   What is the functioning

level of most of the students?  The age level...

Sincerely

M. Guppy
