Hi.

There are many alternative doctors that believe arthritis and many other

diseases are caused by leaky gut syndrome. They believe that LGS occurs

when the intestinal wall is damaged or inflamed. Instead of the intestines

allowing only nutrients to pass through to the bloodstream, it allows

proteins, starches, bacteria, and undigested fats to pass through. These

are looked at as foreign invaders by our immune system and it invokes an

immune response. There is a lot of debate among the researcher about this

theory. Although many researchers agree that the digestive track plays a

key part in the immune response, many don¹t believe that leaky gut exists.

Traditional rheumatologists will pass this all off as a bunch of bunk.

Your doctor doesn¹t want you to take anti-inflammatories because he believes

that they contribute to LGS. NSAIDs block the production of prostaglandins

which stimulate repair of the digestive lining. So if this theory is true,

NSAIDS may contribute to RA. Food allergies, aspirin, ibuprofen, parasite

infections, excessive drinking, antibiotics, a compromised immune system are

all believed to be contributors to LGS

The dietary connection between RA and food sensitivities was first noted by

Zeller in 1949 in " ls of Allergy. " The elimination diet was

used to show this connection. The foods that are believed to most likely

provoke symptoms after an elimination diet are, in order of most to least:

corn, wheat, bacon/pork, oranges, milk, oats, rye, eggs, cheese, grapefruit,

tomato, peanuts, sugar, butter, lamb, lemon, and soy. Cereals were the most

common food, with wheat and corn causing problems in over 50 percent of

people. Diet and RA is hotly debated among the doctors. Some people have a

remarkable improvement after eliminating the foods that they are sensitive

to. Others see no improvement. I am currently doing dietary changes to see

if anything make a difference. I'm consuming large amounts of fresh

vegetable juice daily and eliminating different food groups to see if it

helps. But I am doing it in conjunction with RA meds, because my disease is

to severe to go without them. I take most of my meds by injection to bypass

the stomach.

I don¹t want to discourage your choice of treatment, but I do want you to

understand that this treatment is not the conventional treatment. We all

have the choice as to what we want to do to treat our disease. I only want

you to understand all forms of treatment so that you can make an educated

decision. At the bottom of each email, there is a link to our group¹s

webpage. There are links to most every conceivable treatment of RA. On the

diet and exercise page I have a lot of information about diet theories. I

haven¹t added leaky gut yet, but it will be there within a week.

I urge you to look at the rheumatoid arthritis page and start reading about

this disease. Between the site and all of our knowledgeable members, you

will become very enlightened. Feel free to ask any questions.

Here are a few articles on LGS since there aren't any yet on our website:

Hi a,

Thanks for the information, it is much appreciated. It's not that the chiro

doesn't WANT me to take NSAIDS, but I am severely allergic to them. When I had

surgery last year to remove several tumors in my breast, armpit, and back, at

the same time dealing with a shoulder injury, they gave me NSAIDS which nearly

killed me. After reading a lot about LGS, I could almost be the poster child

for it, having had several strong courses of antibiotics in the past year, HRT,

and previously a poor diet. I owe a lot to this chiro, as the physician he

referred me to for the blood tests said there was nothing wrong with me. He

spent 5 minutes with me, gave me a bag of Celebrex, and said call me if you have

any problems. The chiro requested the blood tests, and said they definitely

show positive for RA. It is early, as I have only had the painful symptoms for

2 months, but they are very real. Right now I am just confused and rather

frightened of my future, but I usually have a positive attitude, and I don't

plan to stay down very long. My daughter just found out she is expecting, and

it may be a multiple, so she is going to need my help. Sorry this is so long,

but it is good to have someone else to talk to. Thanks again, and to all who

read this and offer your support to everyone else who has RA.

Welcome to our group, Judi!

Just a caution: RA can't be either diagnosed or ruled out on the basis

of blood tests alone, even the rheumatoid factor (RF) test. Your history

and clinical presentation are extremely important in determining if RA

is an appropriate diagnosis.

Your first doctor sounds like a loser and, although the chiropractor

could be right, I would advise seeing a rheumatologist for another

opinion about your diagnosis and treatment.

Have you had any x-rays done?

So sorry that you are having so many problems, but congratulations on

the upcoming grandchild (ren?)!

Thanks for the welcome, . Yes, Cory (chiro) wants me to see a

rheumatologist in Indianapolis as soon as I can. That will have to

wait though until my husband can drive me, as I can't seem to hang on

to the steering wheel right now. And my husband is having problems

with his knee from playing golf. I do understand that it takes some

time for a clear picture of this disease. I wish I weren't allergic

to Celebrex & Vioxx. Yes, I had a complete bone scan last week,

which did show something in the ankles, knees, and wrists. I've

worked so hard the last 2 years to get my weight down (hey, no

problem now--lost 10 lbs. in 2 weeks!) and get more fit, and now this

happens. Thanks too for the congrats. on the baby/babies. Judi
