There are big differences in Risser casting -vs- the Early Treatment Mehta

Method. Risser casts have always been used as a last ditch effort at

maintenance or to hold a fusion/hardware procedure. A Risser cast does not

have the appropriate cut-outs, and a Risser frame doesn't have the

3-dimensional corrective ability. Not to mention, a baby doesn't really fit

on an old, huge, Risser frame (unless its been modified in some way).

Risser Casting & Risser Table

I need some information on the Risser Table and Risser Casting. I would like

to see some pictures and see what other people think and experiences are

with this.

Thanks in Advance,

,

It is so hard to make a decision. I am getting ready to send Toby's xrays and

info to Denver. Kansas City is 2 hours from us while Denver is about 8. We have

even discussed moving to Colorado for Toby's treatment. I might be getting ahead

of myself with the whole moving thing but my husband and I have just been

discussing every possible aspect. I just can't see ourselves on the road every 8

weeks. I know you " do what you have to " .

Loma is still in the process of getting one although Dr. Kishan is doing

the Mehta method already.

Hi Belinda,

Just wanted to share our experience with you. Haley was diagnsed at 4 mos of

age with infantile scoliosis. At that point the orthopedic doc (who is the best

in town) suggested " wait and see " he said her curve was barely even enough of a

curve to diagnose her with scoliosis. 3 mos later we returned only to find out

her curve had progressed significantly. He suggested casting. We went for a

2nd opinion, and that doc also suggested casting. We had no idea there were

" different types " of casts. We thought we were on the right track b/c 2 docs

actually agreed about tx. She was placed in a risser cast (you can see her pics

in the album under Haley) The first cast held her curve and kept it from

progressing. Her second cast did not even hold her. Her curve progressed even

with the cast. At that point, the doc said his hands were tied, he did not know

what else to do for her. So then we found this group and the info I WISH I had

found when Haley was 4 mos. We

immediately called Dr. Khoury and began tx with him. He was not down on risser

casting, he only said that Mehta casting was an " improved " risser cast...with

the cutouts and the special table that is used.

Haley is in her 5th Mehta cast and has gone from 39 degrees to 26 degrees. Dr.

Khoury is not optimistic that he can get Haley to 0 degrees, but there is no

telling where we would be without the Mehta cast! I TRULY believe that if we

had not wasted those few precious months in the risser cast and we would have

began her tx with Mehta casting she would be at 0 degrees. Time is SOOO

precious, and we lost it b/c we thought we were on the right track. I am so

happy you are doing your research :) Yay for you!!!

Best wishes to you and your family...keep us posted

Misty and Haley

P.S. Let me add that our local doctor had treated a little boy with idiopathic

scoliosis with the risser cast and had achieved optimal results. But who knows,

the little boy may not have had a progressive curve...who knows those

circumstances. Even with that being said, there are too many people who have

not gotten any results with the risser cast and I ONLY WISH we had never used

the risser cast and started Haley from day one with Mehta casting.
