Guest guest
Hi Kathe, The chance of adhesions coming back are actually very high. They can reoccur within 10 days of the surgery! Right now, they are using Spraygel in Germany where they use laparoscopically without gas and then do a second look surgery within a few days of the original surgery just to make sure that all adhesions were taken down and that no new ones have formed. I don't know of any surgeons who do that kind of follow-up in the states for any type of surgery! The Spraygel barrier has not yet been approved here in the US. They are doing clinical trials for female adhesions only (lower pelvis) and nothing else. So that is a relatively small control group. Most surgeons will not operate until you have totally obstructed. My surgeon has seen a pattern in my adhesions and the fact that I do get relief once this surgery has been done, so the fighting is not quite as bad as other people have it. Some of the problem is, you never know when or where you may obstruct. And once you do obstruct, and they reduce it medically, it then becomes a medical emergency before vital bowel is lost or even death occurs. This problem, adhesion related disorders (ARD), needs to be looked at very seriously by the surgical community to fight for a better quality of life following any abdominal, back, hernia or gynecologic surgery is performed. They are now even noting that gastric bypass surgery is causing adhesion problems and they don't know how to address those issues. I hope you have a restful, pain free night. Gentle, tender, angel hugs, Debs in FL
