There is currently a lively discussion on the Guild's yahoo group

about soy candles and the GMO question. It's worthy of

discussion here, too. I'm posting this from a website I stumbled

upon while goggling the subject.

find others, so please share it and/or your thoughts if you're

interested in this subject.

GMO means genetically modified organism. GE means genetic

engineering. A GMO is engineered into soybeans to make the plant

resistant to Roundup (an herbicide).

What is the name of that Yahoo group?

I looked at your link and for the most part thought it had good information -

however they referred to their palm oil as " steam distilled essential oil " and

the result of steam distilling for processing palm into an oil, is not an

" essential oil " . Personally, unless the company I buy from has some sort of

trade association type assurance that their palm is rainforest friendly - I

avoid palm. And I always avoid soy because almost all soy is GMO.

" What does GMO mean? Genetically Modified Organism is the most common usage

(though 'manipulated' or even 'mutated' might also be appropriate!) The acronyms

GEO (Genetically Engineered Organism) or simply GM or GE are also used. "

Lot's of people don't understand genetic modification or the multiple terms used

to refer to it. What it is not - is creating new plants or animals through

conventional means such as hybridization.

So there may be plants or animals that are Certified Organic, and under the USDA

NOP " The use of GMOs is prohibited in organic production and handling "

http://www.ams.usda.gov/AMSv1.0/getfile?dDocName=STELPRDC5090396

Not all Organic Certification criteria are the same, however, and the USDA NOP

remains the most rigid.
