Guest guest
Our current school district (located in North Houston) is NOT meeting the educational needs of our son. We're not talking a rural district either, just one that believes that children with ASD either have to go it alone in mainstream or be stuck in skills/developmental until they can prove that they can handle mainstream. There is another local school district that actually has a program for children with high- functioning autism that we are investigating. So far, it sounds quite promising. Here's my question, in Texas can a parent petition to transfer to another school district or do you have to physically live within the district's zone? Please let me know if you've had any experience with this situation. Thanks!
Guest guest
We had an issue similar to yours. The school district we wished to send our child to was asking for funds equaling our property tax payment to the district we resided in We would have to pay about $2000.00. Really it's not that bad for the school you want and MUCH less than a private school. I believe they were willing to split it into 2 or 3 payments, too. Just be aware that if your child has behaviors, it may be cause for them to " expel " him if he's completely " main-streamed " and then your back in your home district and out the money anyway. Get all the information you can ahead of time. Ask about any and every scenario you can think of that your child may be involved in and then recap that in a letter to them so that you have it in writing along with what you perceived their answers to be regarding these issues. (Does that make sense?) Hope this helps, carol Subject: Transferring School Districts To: Texas-Autism-Advocacy Date: Monday, September 8, 2008, 1:00 PM Our current school district (located in North Houston) is NOT meeting the educational needs of our son. Please let me know what school district this is (the promising one). What grades are you talking about? I have a 13yo Asperger son who is in a situation like your son's in the N. Houston area. Feel free to e-mail me off-list if you don't want to post it. me2ruth@... Thanks! Ruth
